Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "Free Visual Arts"

You learn to discover your own artistic work experimentally and to test it practically in the studio and workshop in order to express yourself and the world and make real inventions. In doing so, you will develop your own artistic attitude, which you will implement in your works and communicate and defend to third parties.

You can present the results – your works of art – to a wider audience in exhibition projects. The art school regularly organizes exhibitions at the end of the semester and operates its own exhibition rooms in the art school and in the city of Mainz.

You will also pursue a scientific and interdisciplinary perspective during your studies. In seminars and lecture series in the subjects of art theory, media studies, postcolonial studies and art didactics, you will address various theoretical questions, for example:

  • How is art created? What is aesthetics?
  • How can I make a relevant contribution to society with my artistic work?
  • What insight does the history of artistic creation, visual cultures and aesthetics in modern times provide us with since 1800?
  • How do other scientific disciplines influence art?

You can further deepen the knowledge you have acquired in regular excursions, workshops and conferences. Studying art at the JGU Mainz School of Art prepares you perfectly for later work as a freelance artist.

Your studies are divided into two sections:

Basic studies (1st-4th semester)

In the first two semesters you will attend the basic class for general artistic orientation. They lay the foundations for independent artistic work and get to know their interests, skills and talents better. You can also try out new artistic methods and media here. After the second semester, you will be able to choose a specialist class for further study.

From the third semester onwards, you will continue your studies in one of the following classes:

  • Sculpture
  • Film/Video
  • Photography
  • Painting
  • Media art
  • Drawing

Artistic workshops (analog and digital photo laboratory, printmaking, painting technology, media laboratory, wood and metal workshop) as well as theoretical courses complement your studies. The basic course ends with a preliminary diploma examination.

Main course (5th - 9th semester) The further course of your studies depends on your individual artistic development, your chosen focus and your own goals. You will acquire specific artistic procedures and work on expressing yourself in your art. In addition, you will engage intensively and critically with the works of art of your fellow students and your lecturers within the class and across classes. General art events – current and in a historical context – play an important role. You complete your main course of study with the diploma examination.
