Программа обучения "Freie Künste und Wissenschaften" в University of Freiburg

Liberal Arts and Sciences

The internationally oriented and predominantly English-language Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences offers students a broad, interdisciplinary academic education that enables them to focus on the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and technical sciences. In particular, the students are trained in flexible, interdisciplinary thinking and in the concrete application of the problem-solving strategies acquired in this way to complex interdisciplinary issues in research and practice. In the first two semesters, the course combines the teaching of basic academic skills with an introduction to the prerequisites and fundamentals of interdisciplinary work as well as the subject areas of three of the four specialization lines Culture and History, Governance, Life Sciences and Environmental and Sustainability Sciences. From the third semester onwards, students set their own priorities by choosing a line of specialization. In addition, the students can give their studies an individual profile in the higher semesters by taking responsibility for courses in different disciplines.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Freie Künste und Wissenschaften"

Many LAS graduates pursue further academic training in Master and PhD programs. Other graduates engage themselves in intern- and traineeships in NGOs and Think Tanks, cultural organizations, or in businesses and social entrepreneurships. Concerning career paths outside academia, surveys and research show a clear demand for internationally oriented graduates trained in interdisciplinary thought and action – in the US, Germany, and elsewhere: LAS students are prepared for responsibilities and careers in international environments that demand fast and efficient adaptation to varying and complex challenges on a day to day basis. Universities, research and consulting institutions, think tanks, international organizations, politics and administration, media, as well as international firms are all potential employers. So, while career paths for LAS graduates are not as clear-cut as they are for those who study Medicine or Law, studying LAS in Freiburg will provide you with many prerequisites necessary for your specific career goals. The most important ingredient, however, is you: LAS gives you the opportunity to shape your own education. It also challenges you to use that opportunity to set out towards career goals that, ultimately, only you yourself can define.

Учебный план программы обучения "Freie Künste und Wissenschaften"

The LAS program offers interdisciplinary training that allows for individual emphases. The Core (56 ECTS) includes reflection on knowledge and sciences – the key to interdisciplinary education and training –, a curriculum on Responsibility and Leadership, and general academic skills training. In the Electives (64 ECTS), students can choose from a variety of options and courses as well as undertake study projects of their own. The Major (102 ECTS + 16 ECTS Multidisciplinarity) constitutes the students’ training in a specific academic field. LAS offers four Majors: (1) Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, (2) Life Sciences, (3) Governance, (4) Culture and History. It prepares them for careers in international environments that demand fast and efficient adaptation to varying and complex challenges on a day to day basis. Finally, students will learn how to self-responsibly and self-confidently continue to advance their intellectual development after graduation, for and beyond their careers.

    Методика оценки заявок

The selection is based on a ranking list to be created according to the selection criteria. The following selection criteria are taken into account for the formation of the ranking list as part of the selection process:

    • the result of the university entrance qualification for the selected course and
    • the result of the successful selection interview.

If the number of applicants in the selection process exceeds the number of available study places, the selection committee is entitled to make a pre-selection based on the average grade of the university entrance qualification (§ 8 Paragraph 1 Clause 1) and the evaluation of the written Treatise (§ 3 Paragraph 2 Clause 1 No. 4). In the event of such a pre-selection, the number of participants in the selection interview must be at least three times the number of places available in accordance with Section 6, Paragraph 1, Clause 4, No. 1 of the University Admissions Act. The selection committee evaluates the written essay on the basis of the following criteria with a grade between 1 and 5:
    - independent, comprehensible argumentation,
    - structured and clear language,
    - correct external form and spelling.
If the grade for the written paper is between 1 and 1.5, the pre-selection grade based on the average grade of the university entrance qualification improves by 0.3. If the grade is worse than 1.5, but at least 2.0, the preselection grade improves by 0.2. If the grade is worse than 2.0, but at least 2.5, the preselection grade improves by 0.1. In the event of a tie, Section 8 (3) applies.
