Описание программы обучения "Human Medicine"

If you decide to study human medicine, you don't just choose a job. The profession of doctor is characterized by great responsibility. It demands decision-making security, lifelong learning and constant commitment to the patients entrusted to it. The same applies to the decision to take up a career in research or teaching after successfully completing a degree. At the Medical Faculty of Ulm University, we will prepare you as best as possible for this major task.

Modern study concept with a varied learning system: med @ ulm

The innovative Ulm teaching and learning concept med @ ulm is a lively, modern range of courses. The focus is on the success of our students: We promote the acquisition of interdisciplinary medical qualifications and team-based learning. We ensure the quality of medical teaching through comprehensive evaluation. New didactic elements, which are often only offered in so-called reform courses, make it easier for our students to study the extensive material. Blended learning modules with virtual and mobile learning elements via the university's own app alternate with presence phases in the lecture, in the skills or virtual reality lab and during observation.

Individual focus? With pleasure.

A particular advantage of the concept lies in the individualization of the courses offered for our medical students in the form of a personal focus. Various additionally selectable study tracks enable the focus on special disciplines for committed students, PJ students and doctoral candidates. That is our goal: to implement real promotion of young talent.

Learning in practice - right from the start

The holistic training approach enables our students to provide very good practical and patient-oriented treatment. The faculty's own training hospital TTU (ToTrainYou), which was completed in 2021, will offer unique intensive training courses in an almost realistic environment. For this purpose, simulated general practitioner consulting rooms, clinic rooms, operating theaters and a shock room are available. The personal atmosphere of our campus university, the study in small units and the direct, uncomplicated contact with the lecturers guarantee comprehensive support during the course.

We want you to receive the best training - personal, individual, focused.

Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "Human Medicine"

Studying human medicine at the Medical Faculty in Ulm is the best preparation for your future professional life as a doctor. In addition to medical expertise, this includes the acquisition of practical skills for dealing with patients as a matter of course, as well as important soft skills such as conversational skills.

Knowledge of the gender-specific characteristics of diseases, training in dealing with scientific topics and data to prepare for readiness for lifelong learning as well as the use of modern technology complete the training program.

Key qualification "Practical medical skills"

The training of practical skills is a central component of the Ulm training concept med @ ulm. Right from the start, our students should gain clinical experience and practice medical activities and procedures that also take hygiene, communication and documentation into account. The modern training hospital TTU, which was completed in autumn 2021, offers unique opportunities for this. Here, our students train treatments as well as conversational skills in very realistic simulations that are precisely tailored to the respective level of training. The aim is to gradually introduce you to everyday medical practice and to build a bridge between theory from the textbook and practice “on the patient”.

Medical students in Ulm train in an almost realistic environment

The Ulm training hospital offers all the options for modern training in human medicine: It has a fully equipped doctor's office, maps the situation in the clinic, the emergency room and the operating theater and, in addition to the training rooms, an ambulance will also be available in where students can practice treating and transporting patients from the car to the emergency room.

Models can be used to practice simple basic skills, such as correct blood collection. Technically highly developed simulation manikins, so-called high fidelity simulation manikins, which can react adequately to the treatment, can be used to train complex treatment processes until they are safe.

Medical discussions with trained "simulation persons"

For the interaction training with the patient, trained actors and actresses, so-called "simulation persons" are available, who can present a wide variety of clinical pictures depending on the task at hand. The process and quality of the “treatment” are discussed with the teachers in the subsequent feedback discussion. The simulation persons themselves then give personal feedback on the communicative aspects of the simulated doctor-patient conversation.

Numerous exercise options in the medical skills labs

Outside of the TTU training hospital, our students have access to special, decentralized skills labs equipped with various training devices and simulators. Department-specific skills, such as obstetrics, ophthalmology and ENT medicine, are trained here under the guidance of the supervising clinician during the respective block internships.

The focus in the centrally located Skills Lab Surgery is on the self-determined practice of basic medical skills. Here you can choose from around 25 different stations at your own pace and according to your personal interests and practice "skills in context", i.e. within the framework of realistic courses of action. You will be guided and supported by professionally and didactically trained student peer teachers, predominantly those who have completed the "teaching track". A standardized success control, the "practice check", can be filed at each Skills Lab station.

OR simulations in the Theatrum Anatomicum

The "Theatrum anatomicum" is a real-life operating theater in the central building of the University of Ulm. In cooperation with experienced, clinically active doctors, a special link is created between the learning content of the preclinical and the subsequent specialist content of the clinical semester.

The detailed demo operating theater with a standing stand for around 70 spectators is a special feature of the medical faculty: It was financed entirely from tuition fees.

This is where the optional “Fit for the OP” course takes place, which is a perfect combination of pre-clinical and clinical training in medical studies and prepares our students intensively for their first clinical training. You will practice correct behavior in the operating room and will be prepared for future courses of action in the operating room through topics such as instrument science, suturing techniques and surgical hand disinfection.

For safe and correct behavior in the operating room, skills are imparted through handling the human body and practicing the hygiene rules in the demo operating room, which cannot be simulated on the computer. In this way, the transfer of anatomical specialist knowledge into the operating theater context is illustrated and the students bring the anatomical knowledge they have just learned into a connection with the (later) clinical application.

Key qualification "Scientific quality in studies wise @ ulm"

wise @ ulm - Scientific work in the study of human medicine

Another fundamental component of training in human medicine is scientific work - especially the ability to deal critically and in detail with a topic or a special medical question. Our students are therefore introduced to the ability to secure medical practice with scientific knowledge and to contribute to scientific progress with their own publications.

wise @ ulm contains mandatory basic components of basic scientific competences, without which the medical profession cannot be practiced seriously. Here, for example, the responsible handling of guidelines and scientific publications or in-depth research skills for one's own lifelong training are conveyed.

For particularly interested or advanced students who are striving for a perspective in research or an academic career with a doctorate or habilitation, we offer in-depth discussion of topics from science and research in individual modules.

Specifically, the key competency “Scientific work wise @ ulm” is conveyed at the Medical Faculty Ulm in various event offers that are spread over the entire course of studies. You can find detailed information about the offers in the individual semesters on Moodle.

Key qualification "Gender Medicine"

At the beginning of their studies, students are made aware of gender and gender-specific aspects in the medical context. For this we offer the basic curriculum “Gender Medicine”. Gender medicine has long been established as an important subject within medicine. It pursues the systematic, evidence-based investigation of gender differences or similarities in medicine.

The basic curriculum includes a range of lectures that our medical students can attend during their studies between the 1st and 10th semester and acquire the important key qualification “gender competence”.

The advanced curriculum was developed as a clinical elective for students from the 7th semester onwards. Under the title “Life phases - gender and gender-specific aspects”, we give particularly interested participants the opportunity to deal with gender and gender-specific differences in the lives of men and women in an interdisciplinary and case-based manner and to derive consequences for their own medical work. All efforts of gender medicine serve the overriding goal of increasing quality through optimized individual patient care.

The gender-medical contents are laid out longitudinally and are made visible in the respective compulsory teaching of the various subject areas and should become a natural dimension of medical studies in the medium term.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Human Medicine"

Would you like to complete part of your studies abroad? You can use various exchange programs at the Medical Faculty in Ulm, some of which are also supported by scholarships. You can gain experience abroad for one or two semesters in the clinical part of your studies or later as part of the PY. You can find an overview of the variety of participating partner universities, addresses and further details for an initial decision-making on Moodle.

The study places in the exchange programs are usually allocated by the Dean of Studies (exception: PJ-Tertial Malawi). The announcement begins in the winter semester for the following exchange year. For study achievements that you have successfully completed abroad, you will then receive certificates of equivalence from the Dean of Studies in Ulm, which will then be recognized by the State Examination Office.

Стажировки и практика в программе обучения "Human Medicine"

Nomen est omen: In the practical year the application of human medical knowledge is the focus of the training - the care of the patients and the use in a university clinic, an academic teaching hospital or in the teaching practice. Since the trainees in their practical year are legally still students, the work is carried out under the guidance, supervision and responsibility of the doctors training.

Bridge from studying human medicine to professional practice

The practical year takes place in the last academic year, in the third clinical study section, and comprises 48 weeks of practical work. This time is in turn divided into three periods of 16 weeks each (tertials). One of these tertials is completed in each of the compulsory subjects internal medicine and surgery as well as in another clinical-practical elective or in general medicine.

Plan individually, manage your medical career

Here it is important to set your personal course at an early stage. Therefore, there are many questions before the PY that you can only answer individually and depend on your personal motivation and your professional plans. Which elective? University clinic or academic teaching hospital? Academic career or medical specialization? First PY and then PhD? Or the other way around? You will find detailed information on many of these questions on the PJ-input page, which was developed as a joint platform of the universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg / Mannheim, Tübingen and Ulm.

    Методика оценки заявок

In human medicine and dentistry, 5% of the available study places nationwide are awarded to foreign applicants. The following places are available for foreign applicants at Ulm University:

in Human Medicine : 17 study places in the winter semester

The demand for these study places is very high. In the last application process for human medicine, Ulm University received around 400 applications. In fact, the chances of getting a place in these courses are only realistic with very good grades and a very good TestAS result.

    The selection grade is calculated

    a) 50% based on the average grade of the university entrance qualification and

    b) 50% according to the result of the TestAS. The average of the standard value achieved in the core test and the standard value achieved in the subject module “Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences” gives the grade according to the conversion table

Note values are determined to one place after the comma; it is not rounded.

The grade calculated from a) and b) improves by 0.3 if the language certificate for university entrance is DSH-3, TestDaF 4 x 5 or the “German” part of the assessment test at preparatory colleges with the grade “very good”. < br />
If the selection grade is equal, priority will be given to the result of the TestAS. If there is another tie, the lot decides.
