Программа обучения "Integrative Composition" в Folkwang University of the Arts

Integrative Komposition

A person studying Composition is one who would like to create original music and at the same time in the great majority of cases will decide on a freelance activity. Whether it is a question of independent new works for the concert hall, music in a medial context or an artistic statement on a released sound medium, the composers will always find themselves in a highly ambitious environment faced by equally high artistic and technical demands. The Integrative Composition study course provides a level of qualification designed to meet these demands. This course takes particular consideration of the requirements profile of contemporary compositions that is increasingly overlapping the classical directions of composition. The study course consists of four artistic subjects, one of which has to be decided on as a central artistic subject (CAS), being then studied for the entire duration of the course. In addition, the principles, the mindset and working method of the other subjects will be taught as integrative artistic subjects (IAS) for a period of one year each.

Учебный план программы обучения "Integrative Composition"

The “Bachelor of Music – Integrative Composition” course combines four artistic subjects.

They are these:

  • Instrumental composition
  • Electronic composition
  • Composition and visualization
  • Pop composition

One of these subjects is the central artistic subject (ZKF), which is studied throughout the entire course. The other subjects are each studied for one year as integrative artistic subjects (IKF). An IKF can be continued as an additional central artistic subject if the performance is appropriate.

If the requirements are met (sufficient prior knowledge of jazz theory and arrangement), the subject of jazz composition/arrangement (from the Bachelor Jazz Performing Artist program) can also be studied as an additional central artistic subject in the jazz department in the 3rd and 4th years of study.

The modules of the degree program contain various, mostly ZKF-specific sub-modules and events

  • Composition (ZKF/IKF)
  • Theory (e.g.: composition theory, instrumentation, analysis, sound synthesis)
  • Practice (e.g.: instrumental playing, ear training, performance practice, ensemble leadership)
  • Science (e.g.: music history, acoustics, instrument studies)
  • Technology (e.g. recording studio technology)
  • Project (e.g. so-called labs)

In addition, there is an elective area with various modules and events in integrative composition (e.g. music informatics, live electronics, rhythm and groove) and an optional area with offerings outside of integrative composition.

We also offer training in musicology, music pedagogy and school music teaching; and in line with the sense of a “university of the arts”, equal attention is given to practical and artistic aspects. All courses are currently taught in modules and are adapted to Bachelor’s/Master’s programmes.
