International Business Studies

The Bachelor's degree in International Business Studies (IBS) is a modular, elite course that provides the basis for an international career. The course plan guarantees the imparting of a sound basic knowledge in economics, knowledge of the general conditions of international business, the mastery of practical business methods and instruments for solving international management tasks as well as intercultural competence in order to be able to operate successfully in a global competitive environment.

IBS graduates can work in numerous business fields such as in large industrial companies, international corporations and medium-sized businesses, which are increasingly seeking to recruit graduates with intercultural skills and international experience. They are also suitable for positions in banks and consultancy firms where their tasks may include working in international divisions or assisting management with internationalization, planning international market entry strategies, international accounting, international tax and finance planning, international marketing, or supporting international employees.

Competencies

Students develop a comprehensive set of internationally oriented skills through applying gained knowledge of the fundamental aspects of business and the conditions that affect it. Furthermore, they are taught the use of practical methods and instruments for handling tasks in international management. A semester abroad allows students to improve their intercultural abilities, while the use of special modules lends the opportunity to work on their own personal development. Additionally, students must develop an advanced proficiency of one foreign language, along with a more limited proficiency of a second foreign language.

Postgraduate studies: Master

Anyone who completes the bachelor's degree with an above-average exam can then, or after a phase of professional practice, acquire a master's degree in a four-semester course as a postgraduate degree, which corresponds to the level of today's university diploma. This degree would also be a prerequisite for a doctoral program with which the Dr. rer. pole. as the highest possible academic degree.

The Department of Economics offers nine master's programs, including: a. International Business Studies (MIBS), Management, Marketing or FACT (Finance-Auditing-ControllingTaxation).

Students can also acquire up to 60 ECTS credits during the compulsory stay abroad, which may be accredited on the basis of the learning agreement made with their subject supervisors. The university has over 100 partnership agreements with universities in over 40 countries on five continents. At the end of the degree program, students must complete a Bachelor’s thesis.

The Bachelor's degree in International Business Studies (IBS) is a modular, elite course that provides the basis for an international career.

The course plan guarantees the imparting of a sound basic knowledge in economics, knowledge of the general conditions of international business, the mastery of practical business methods and instruments for solving international management tasks as well as intercultural competence in order to be able to operate successfully in a global competitive environment.

The students spend part of their studies abroad. The course starts in the winter semester and usually comprises six semesters in which 180 ECTS points must be earned.

Study structure

The bachelor's degree is divided into two parts. In the first two semesters, the assessment phase, compulsory courses must be completed. In the subsequent four-semester Bachelor phase, students can choose specializations that suit their interests.

Obligatory

In the assessment phase, basic knowledge of business and economics is imparted, in addition to the basics and framework conditions of international business. These include, for example, the events "International Corporate Management", which deals with the basic questions of the management of internationally active companies, and "Foreign Trade", in which the students acquire sound knowledge of the causes and effects of international trade and deal with currency issues.

The regional focus is on the Anglo-American and Romance-speaking countries as well as the emerging markets in Asia and Eastern Europe. Important aspects of the politics, society and economy of these countries are presented and examples of the special features of management are dealt with. In the "Intercultural Competence" event, students are interactively prepared for activities in other cultural circles using role-playing games, simulations and videos, while in the "Case Studies on International Management" event, concrete examples from internationally active companies are analyzed and problems of international management are dealt with independently be.

Electives

In the second phase of the course, the Bachelor phase, IBS students can acquire a total of 60 ECTS, with at least 20 ECTS being earned at a partner university abroad. Another 25 ECTS can be earned from all areas of specialization within the department.

IBS students also have the opportunity to choose a field of study. All students must acquire key qualifications during their bachelor's degree. This includes, for example, language courses and a PC-based introduction to the practice of scientific work.
