International Media Cultural Work (IMC)

Curating – Communicating – Managing – These three terms span the huge field of digital media and its technologies, for which International Media Cultural Work will qualify its students as superbly imaginative leaders and strategically outstanding executives. During the program,students will focus on media aesthetic education and cultural communication to develop expertise in inspiring society to a deeper and critical understanding of media technologies’cultural implications, as well as their social and ethicalphilosophical dimensions. The course’s practical goal is to encourage society and individuals to use media for skillful self-expression, as well as for creative and emancipatory practices. The program is conducted in English. Its perspective is international and intercultural. The students will work in transdiscipline, collaborative, and experimental environments.

Transdisciplinary Media Cultural Projects are the central modules of our Master´s program. They are obligatory, and are credited with 15 CPs. Knowledge is not frontally communicated, but is conveyed under the supervision of an transdisciplinary expert teaching team, specialized in the areas of media cultural discourses, curatorial and communication approaches, project development and practical realization as well as cultural management and public relations. Numerous lectures and workshops held by reknowned media cultural experts complement the project work.
Each semester the students perform media cultural projects (e.g. exhibitions, workshops, educational programs) in teams of four to ten students. Students with different skills from their undergraduate studies work in these teams closely together to bring their knowledge, methods and experience to the project. They learn strategies of other media cultural forms and develop transdisciplinary skills.

The Master program International Media Cultural Work (IMC) consists of three foundation semesters and possibly an internship depending on the student’s academic history: Applicants with a 7-semester undergraduate or a graduate degree study 3 semesters, while candidates with a 6-semester Bachelor’s degree must complete an internship before their final master project.

Per semester, one compulsory module (Transdisciplinary Media Cultural Projects/TMCPs) has to be attended as well as three electives. The third/fourth semester is dedicated to the master project. The TMCPs are research-oriented, merging theoretical knowledge, communicational concepts, technological methods, managerial steering strategies with cultural practices. The electives within the field of Curating and Communicating are complemented by electives from the field of Management and Technology. They can be selected according to personal specializations.

    The Faculty of Media brings together all of its courses on the media campus of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, which deal with media, information, journalism, marketing and public relations in online communication in an interdisciplinary manner. By studying on the media campus, students can qualify for a wide variety of professions within the media sector. Training courses include information managers for libraries and companies, online journalists, PR specialists, specialists in online marketing, social media managers, media trainers, game developers, specialists in animation, interaction and interface designers, filmmakers and sound experts. Bachelor and master level courses are offered.

    The eligibility assessment, includes the final grade point average of the bachelor’s degree or diploma, practical experience, and a letter of motivation. 

    The following criteria are used to determine aptitude and are assessed with points up to the maximum number of points given:

    • a. Overall grade of the preliminary course - a maximum of 40 points. Negative points are not awarded. (Formula: points = 20 * (3.0 - overall grade))
    • b. Relevancy of the preliminary course - maximum 20 points. Only relevant modules up to a maximum of 200 ECTS credit points are considered in the evaluation. 0.1 points are credited per CP. (Formula: points = relevant CP * 0.1)
    • c. Duration of practical experience - a maximum of 20 points The relevant practical months (max. 20 months) after completing the preliminary course are taken into account. (Formula: points = number of months of practice)
    • d. Qualified practical experience, prizes and awards - maximum 40 points. The number and type of prizes as well as important practical projects are taken into account. (Formula: points = arithmetic mean of the individual assessment of the members of the admissions committee)
    • e. Letter of motivation in English - maximum 05 points The quality of the letter of motivation will be assessed. The criteria for quality are originality, credibility and formulation. (Formula: points = arithmetic mean of the individual assessment of the members of the admissions committee)
    • f. Brief synopsis of a project in English - maximum 35 points The quality of the synopsis is assessed. Criteria for the quality are topicality and relevance of the proposed research and development field, connectivity of the synopsis, especially with regard to the subject areas of the course, scientific foundation and presentation of the synopsis as well as previous experience and intensity of dealing with the chosen topic. (Formula: points = arithmetic mean of the individual assessment of the members of the admissions committee.)

    The suitability for the master’s course is determined if the applicant has achieved a total of 80 points or more in the aptitude test.
