Master's thesis

The topic of the master's thesis is issued by the supervisor after the end of the first semester and before the end of the second semester, i.e. between April 1st and September 30th. The supervisor must inform the Magisterium of the issue in writing; When this notification is received at the Master's Office, the four-month period for completing the Master's thesis begins. This period may be extended by a maximum of two months upon a justified request.

Oral examination

The material of the oral examination includes basic principles from the three areas of civil law, public law and criminal law. In one of these three areas, the candidate must choose a specialist area, which will then be examined instead of the basics.

If, for example, family law is chosen as a specialist area from the area of civil law, only family law will be examined instead of the basic principles of civil law.

The oral examination generally takes place at the end of the lecture period of the second semester. Please note the information under “News for the summer semester”.

The examinations take place in the offices of the respective examiners; The names of the examiners will be communicated to the candidate by the Magisterium.
The following documents must be enclosed with the registration for the oral examination:

  • Written application to the dean for admission to the oral examination with a statement about the chosen specialist area,
  • Proof of enrollment in postgraduate studies,
  • Proof sheet to prove the proper course of the postgraduate studies,
  • Proof of achievements from the three lectures for foreigners and the seminar.

If you are not yet able to attach the seminar certificate because you will receive your presentation after the registration deadline, please enclose confirmation of your participation. You can get a form for this at the magister's office.

In preparation for the oral examination, a special lecture is offered, which is intended to familiarize the participants with the examination situation. In discussions about topics from the three examination areas, the aim is to practice free speech on legal topics and improve oral expression.

The postgraduate course lasts two semesters. It can only be started in the winter semester.
The postgraduate course covers the basic principles of German law - namely civil law, public law and criminal law. Specialization in a specific area of law is only possible by choosing the seminar, the courses attended and the topic for the master's thesis.
Attending the following events is mandatory:

Winter semester:

  • Lecture on civil law for foreigners
  • Lecture on public law for foreigners
  • Lecture on criminal law for foreigners

Summer semester:

  • a seminar of the student's choice

Proof of performance must be provided in all four events. Participation in the final exam is required in the lectures. The requirements for proof of performance in the seminar are determined by the respective professor; As a rule, a written presentation and an oral presentation are required.

If you would like to make use of the option of replacing a lecture and seminar by taking part in a basic course, please contact the student advisory service in advance.

Registering for the lectures for foreigners is - as is generally the case with lectures - not required.

In addition to these compulsory courses, so many additional courses (lectures, seminars) must be attended in the two semesters that, including the compulsory lectures for foreigners and the seminar, there is a total of at least 24 semester hours per week for the two semesters combined. It is important to ensure that the courses are distributed as evenly as possible over the two semesters, i.e. ideally 12 hours per week in the winter semester and 12 hours per week in the summer semester.

The student selects these additional courses from the faculty's course catalog according to his/her interests.

The supervisor during the postgraduate studies is appointed by the dean. When registering, participants receive a form on which they can indicate in which area they would like to write their master's thesis. If contact has already been made with a professor or a supervision confirmation has been received, this must also be stated. The supervisors will then be appointed during the first semester.
