Studying law means dealing with the basics of social coexistence and learning the principles and values ​​according to which it is designed. So jurisprudence is very diverse and realistic and nowhere near as dry and inaccessible as it is said to be - on the contrary!

The university course is divided into a compulsory subject and a focus area. It prepares you for the First Legal Examination and aims to train the so-called unitary lawyer : You acquire all the knowledge and skills necessary for legal work, critical thinking and responsible legal action.

In the compulsory subject course you will be trained in all three areas of law:

  • Civil law (with commercial, company and labor law) and civil procedure law
  • Criminal and criminal procedural law
  • Public law: State, constitutional and administrative law, European and international law

Furthermore, the teaching of subject-related foreign language skills and so-called key qualifications such as B. negotiation management, interviewing, rhetoric, dispute settlement, meditation, interrogation theory and communication skills.

In addition, basic subjects such as legal history, legal philosophy or legal sociology are offered. They create interdisciplinary references to other specialist areas.

In the focus area study you deal with topics that are of particular interest to you. It serves the early specialization of all students. However, this does not mean a determination for the later career.

Legal clerkship

You can complete a two-year preparatory service after completing your university studies and passing the First Legal Examination . This can be done at courts and public prosecutors, authorities, lawyers and notaries, but also partly abroad. He graduates with the Second State Examination . With it, the qualification for judicial office and higher administrative service is acquired. This is also a prerequisite for almost all other legal professions (in particular that of the lawyer).

The preparatory service can be performed in all federal states. Legal trainees receive maintenance allowance during their preparatory service, which ensures their livelihood.

Structure of the course

The learning material is conveyed through lectures and accompanied by working groups that practice the technique of solving legal cases in small groups.

Basic studies

As a rule, the first three semesters are planned for the basic course. During this time you will take the so-called intermediate examination and acquire at least one basic certificate.

Main course

In the main course you will attend the exercises for advanced learners in civil law, public law and criminal law. Proof of achievement must also be provided here.

As early as the fourth semester, you have the opportunity to take part in the LEONIE exam course. You will learn at an early stage to process original exams in different steps.

The focus area studies are generally completed alongside the compulsory subject studies. It comprises at least 16 hours per week and is usually taken in the fifth semester.

Practical study time

Exam preparation

From the end of the sixth semester, the " Leipziger Examensoffensive "Special free events for exam preparation and a weekly exam course are offered. During this time, the entire exam-relevant material is repeated.

The preparation for the First Legal Exam takes about one and a half years.

First legal examination

The goal of studying law is to successfully pass the First Legal Examination (formerly E rstes Staatsexamen ). This is divided into two parts: the state compulsory subject examination on the one hand and the university focus area examination on the other.

Anyone who starts the compulsory subject examination after the eighth semester has an attempt to improve (the so-called "free shot"). If the focus area examination is taken before the end of the tenth semester, there is also the possibility of an attempt to improve.
