In the Mathematical Data Science degree programme, students learn mathematics, statistics and computer science. The University of Göttingen is highly reputed throughout the world of academia and research. Its partnerships within the Coimbra Group and the U4 Network, active agreements running with institutions of higher education in some ninety countries, a raft of scholarship opportunities for international students and researchers, and more than fifty English-language Master and Ph.D. programmes - these prove the University's strongly international stance.
What is true for the University of Göttingen holds for the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science as well. It would not be the same without numerous international partnerships and exchange opportunities, international students and academics, who come from many countries. The Study Office Mathematics seeks to increase further the proportion of students from abroad as well as to extend the breadth of our international networks.
We coordinate the international relations and provide counseling and services for international students as well as for those from Göttingen who are planning their study abroad. Apart from that we are working closely with the Göttingen International Office and the international community of students currently hosted in Göttingen.

During the first year of the programme, students will acquire sound mathematical knowledge in the areas of analysis, linear algebra and computer science. In the second year, the basic principles of mathematical data science will be covered; statistical and numerical methods are to be dealt with in particular. In the third year, the students will be familiarized with current research topics in a study focus area of their own choice. They will write their Bachelor’s thesis in this research focus area. Possible study focus areas are:
- Optimization and Imaging
- Mathematical Statistics
- Machine Learning
- Applied Statistics and Econometrics
What all of these areas have in common is their requirement for competent scientific work with algorithms in areas such as data analysis, pattern recognition and visualisation.

Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science
Georg-August-Universität GöttingenThe Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science was founded in October of 2008. It is a fusion of the former Faculty of Mathematics and the Institute of Computer Science.
The faculty offers an attractive study program: Bachelor studies mathematics and applied computer science, Master studies mathematics, business mathematics and applied computer science, as well as 2-subject-bachelor studies and master of education qualifying for a legal clerkship at a grammar school. The faculty has also been offering the Bachelor's degree in Applied Data Science and Mathematical Data Science since 2018. There are very good doctoral graduation possibilities joining the doctoral programs in mathematics, computer science or environmental informatics of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). The points score is calculated by combining the overall score on the certificate of qualification for higher education with the scores for three subjects which are relevant for the desired programme. For every subject, the arithmetic average of the scores during the last four terms is calculated. For details see the sample calculation below.
