Mathematics as one of the oldest sciences has always been both fundamental and application-oriented. On the one hand, mathematics is the common language for describing structural and quantitative relationships in the natural, engineering and economic sciences. With the help of mathematical models, mathematical solution processes and their implementation on computers, it is possible to an ever greater extent to analyze, simulate and optimize complex processes in all of these sciences. On the other hand, basic mathematical research has made enormous progress in the last few decades, which in turn has found completely surprising applications, e.g. number theory / algebraic geometry in cryptography. Our society therefore needs a sufficient number of mathematically qualified specialists who are informed about the possibilities of mathematics. Today, mathematics is often even regarded as a key technology.

In each of our mathematics courses you will learn not only technical knowledge and skills, but also many other qualifications: abstract thinking, problem-solving skills and perseverance and, last but not least, the presentation of complex issues in seminars and colloquium lectures.

That is why mathematics, business and technical mathematics graduates from the University of Bayreuth work in many different industries: in banks and insurance companies as well as in the software and high-tech industry or in management consulting - in the region, in the whole Germany and worldwide. Mathematics graduates have excellent job prospects that are largely independent of the economic cycle.

In addition, the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bayreuth is involved in international doctoral colleges, DFG research groups, DFG research focuses and many other research projects, in which there are many opportunities for the best of our graduates to be active in mathematical research here in Bayreuth and aim for a PhD.

The Bachelor / Master program in Mathematics is a two-stage mathematics program with an application subject of your choice.

The advanced modules cover mathematics in terms of breadth. The comprehensive overview of the areas and methods of mathematics that you receive here provides you with the tools for your further studies.

In the advanced modules you have a free choice from many interesting areas of mathematics. From the investigation of algebraic structures through the geometry and mathematical analysis of complex phenomena to statistics, optimization and the implementation of numerical algorithms on the computer to solve real practical problems, you can choose what you want to study in more depth according to your interests.

The application subject, which makes up around 20% of the course work, is studied from the first semester onwards. In addition to the “classics” of physics and computer science, there are many other options in Bayreuth (currently: biology, geoecology, philosophy and economics, engineering or economics).
