The aim of the study program is, in addition to the scientific demands of the subject, to provide application-oriented training for the professional practice of graduates who take on responsible tasks in different areas. On the basis of broad specialist knowledge and various key competencies, the graduates are able to cope with the complex tasks of the international communication and media industry in their journalistic, economic and media-technical dimensions and to participate independently in integrated media production and marketing processes in the company in a team-oriented and success-oriented manner .

The scientific basics imparted in the study program also enable you to work on the final thesis and, together with the bachelor's degree, to further qualify in master's programs

The focus of the media management course is, in addition to the development of personal and social skills, also the entrepreneurial, media-market economy and legal conditions and processes of media production and marketing. In addition, there is a well-founded journalistic / journalistic know-how from researching, organizing and writing to the design of media offers. The classic and new media disciplines are not side by side, but are linked by certain modules in the sense of a modern "cross-media" exploitation chain.

By working on their own scientific tasks, the students first get to know methods of scientific work . You are familiar with the strategies of searching for sources and literature and will be able to assess and reflect on various sources. In addition, there are methods of citing and documenting as well as the presentation and moderation of scientific results. An introduction to the basics of statistics contributes to the development of application-oriented scientific analysis skills.

After completing the course, the students have in-depth technical, methodological and specialist skills in media management. In addition, the study program aims to develop various overarching competencies . This includes, for example, communication and journalistic mediation skills. In viewing and comparing media processes and products, the students continue to develop their analysis, criticism and reflection skills. You are able to organize projects in a solution-oriented manner and plan them realistically. Furthermore, they develop social and intercultural skills by working together on projects and getting to know international media systems. The associated assumption of responsibility, especially in internships, project work and, if necessary, stays abroad, enables students to participate in civic participation. They are able to represent the interests of their fellow students or colleagues in the context of discussions or presentations and can proceed diplomatically and democratically in debates. Tutoring for younger students also gives them the opportunity to express their social commitment. The ability of the degree program to familiarize oneself with a complex topic in a targeted and multi-perspective manner also trains the students' skills in problem-solving and reflective handling of social debates. In this way, their sense of civic participation is developed on various levels.

With regard to subject-specific knowledge and skills , students are made familiar with journalistic basics and production techniques. After completing the study program, you will know the basics of business and economics and understand the importance of economic contexts for media management. Furthermore, the students are able to evaluate and compare the results of empirical communication research and to conduct communication research themselves. Based on the basics of business mathematics and computer science, the students are further able to apply a broad overview of media practice, media functions and media processes in their work. Ultimately, the students learn strategies of public relations, media education and comparative marketing in order to enable a combination of different skills in terms of media management.

The professional field of media manager has changed a lot in recent years. Mainly due to digitization, but also due to the increasing convergence of markets, new areas of responsibility have been added. The field of media management can therefore no longer be assigned to a special media area, but requires graduates to be highly adaptable and transferring skills.

In general, media managers develop solutions for successful media marketing of products. This can be advertising, but also entertainment and information media. Therefore, media managers initially appear as market researchers who can competently analyze the current situation and understand how it works. You then design project plans and strategies to position the product to be conveyed, to make it known and to maintain its awareness.

Products and projects that media managers market can be found in all media areas, such as film and television, radio and print, but also online media. That is why media managers work in publishing houses, broadcasters, advertising agencies, or in the marketing departments of companies. Positions in public relations or at market research institutes are also possible. Last but not least, software companies are possible employers.

Due to the different specializations offered in the course, students can already make an initial orientation within this broad field. In the “Media Journalism” specialization, students get to know the areas of sales and marketing by deepening aspects of Web Content Distribution, Web 4.0 and Dynamic Web Application. Here you have a special insight into the professional field of online marketing, advertising and the distribution of journalistic content. In the "Media Production" course, on the other hand, you receive an overview of film and TV production and screenwriting and are therefore more likely to be prepared for a position in the field of generating media content. The "eSports and Games Marketing" specialization offers students extensive technical and practical insight into the development and marketing of games and the implementation of eSports events. In “Media and Economics”, on the other hand, they are made familiar with overarching strategies of corporate management and international management in order to take on management positions in media companies, project management activities in the field of media sales or responsible positions in media marketing.

Although the specializations thus enable the professional field to be concretized, the students are instructed with regard to a broad range of competencies, so that they can be confronted with different positions and different tasks, as well as market and advertise cross-media products.

Previous experience

In the regulations on the admission procedure it is stated: Previous experience that was acquired in the media sector or in a field of activity that has materially relevant relationships to the content of the selected course of study can be incorporated into the evaluation. Previous experience includes in particular:

  1. Internships and extracurricular benefits,
  2. Vocational training and practice,
  3. Part-time and voluntary activities,
  4. independent publication activities,
  5. other media activities.

Since the media courses are designed to be interdisciplinary, we also recognize a wide range of previous experience.

Show us where your talents, skills and interests are, regardless of how you acquired them or were able to show them so far.

The admissions committee can share the previous experience with max. Rate 29 points, taking into account the type and scope of experience.

Own presentation

Both content-related and formal criteria are used to evaluate the self-presentation. This means that both the subject and the form of presentation as well as the regulations for the scope must be observed. A maximum of 29 points can be awarded for the evaluation.

For the winter semester 2019/2020, the selection process for Bachelor Media Management resulted in the following selection limits:

Selection procedure 80%: procedural points - 46

Performance 10%: HZB grade - 1.4
