Modern medicine is in constant progress - both in the basic subjects and in the medical disciplines. The practical demands on doctors and medical researchers are constantly increasing. The Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg designed the model course "Medicine - iMED" in order to take these challenges into account during training. Its central guiding principle is scientific orientation - that is, imparting a critical attitude, problem and method awareness, structuring ability and independence as well as the ability to orientate yourself towards evidence-based science. Developing practical skills is just as much a task as promoting psycho-social skills, which are essential for the medical profession.

After passing the university exams, completing the practical year and passing the medical exams, students receive their license to practice medicine. As a rule, this is followed by several years of specialist training in the preferred medical field. Whether in hospitals or as a resident in a practice - doctors have excellent career prospects. General practitioners in rural areas in particular are urgently needed.

The practical year is the third stage of study and is a coherent practical training of 48 weeks, which is divided into three thematically separate sections (tertials) of 16 weeks each:
- Surgery
- Internal medicine
- Elective
The order of the subjects is formally arbitrary. An exception is the elective general medicine, which must have been preceded by the compulsory internal medicine.

The medicine course comprises ten semesters at the university as well as a practical year (11th and 12th semesters). The curriculum in the integrated model course iMED consists of two independent but complementary strands of compulsory courses:
- the compulsory area (core curriculum) and
- the compulsory elective area (compulsory elective curriculum / second tracks).
While all students pass through the compulsory area equally, there are options for the second tracks between various series of courses on offer. This enables an initial deepening of individual medical interests and thus a profile formation during the studies.
The subjects in the elective area are based on the faculty's research profile:
- Neuroscientific Research
- Cardiovascular research
- Tumor research
- Health services research
- Inflammation Research
Each of the first nine semesters usually consists of two six-week modules from the core area, a two-week module from the elective area and the examination periods.
