The aim of the medical activity is to preserve life, alleviate suffering and protect or restore health. Doctors work mainly in practices and clinics. Other employment opportunities include health departments, rehabilitation facilities, health centers, hospices, medical laboratories, medical associations and health insurance. After successfully completing medical studies and obtaining a medical license, you can begin training as a medical specialist. This training is carried out in full-time practice of the medical activity at approved training centers (for example hospital departments, rehabilitation clinics or medical practices). The medical work is remunerated. For the further education regulations in Germany not the universities but the medical associations, in Hessen the Landesärztekammer Hessen, are responsible.
At the moment there are 33 areas in Hessen where further education is possible: from general medicine and anaesthesiology to ophthalmology, neurology and forensic medicine to transfusion medicine and urology. In various fields, such as surgery and internal medicine, various specialist medical certificates (FA) may be acquired, e.g. FA Cardiac Surgery or FA Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. The content and duration of the respective further education are defined in the further education regulations for physicians in Hesse. A special feature is the advanced training in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This presupposes, in addition to the medical approbation, also the dental state examination.

The three-month nursing service can be completed before you begin your studies, but only after you have obtained your university entrance qualification. It must be proven when reporting on the first part of the medical exam and can only be done during the study period during the non-teaching period. The nursing service can also be completed in individual sections lasting at least 30 days (or one month) each. During the clinical study period, four months' work is required.
Our tip: Take care of as much of the nursing service as possible before beginning your studies.

The Frankfurt Department of Medicine has a high international reputation for its research focus, especially in the field of cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience, oncology / immunology and translational drug discovery.
The Department of Medicine has completely revised and changed the curriculum. The goals of the redesign were:
- Orientation of study content both to the needs of the practicing physicians and to the main research areas of our faculty
- Increasing the motivation of students and teachers
- Prevention of (city) anonymity through integration of students in small groups and creation of a university and departmental identity
- Promote student initiative
- encouragement for independent scientific work
- Compatibility with international standards of medical education
- Improving the practical relevance of training
- Increasing psychosocial competence in the doctor-patient relationship
In order to realize these goals, the contents of the study were organized interdisciplinarily in thematic blocks. Selected clinical pictures are the focus of training from the beginning of the preclinical study phase. For this purpose, basic subject areas with those of increasing degree of complexity are offered in an interdisciplinary order in a logically consecutive order. The Frankfurt training goal is that students are able to independently diagnose the frequent and important illnesses requiring immediate treatment before the practical year and are able to initiate therapy measures and to guide patients.

The application must be sent to the Foundation for Admission to Universities (hochschulstart.de) in Dortmund. In the hochschulstart.de procedure, 20% of all applicants are selected directly via the Abitur grade and 20% over the qualifying period. The remaining 60% are admitted through a university selection procedure, which is carried out by the University of Frankfurt. Applicants can attend up to 6 universities in the respective university selection process. If you want to take part in the university selection process of the University of Frankfurt, you have to tick this in hochschulstart.de application.
