During your studies, you will acquire scientific and clinical knowledge that will enable you to take up medical work after completing your sixth year of study. The medical degree is divided into two years of pre-clinical studies, three years of clinical studies and the practical year (PJ). At the end of the course, the application for the license to practice medicine must be submitted to the competent authority in the state.

The medical degree comprises six years of study and is divided into a two-year pre-clinical course, a three-year clinical course and a practical year.
In the pre-clinical studies, scientific basics for the clinical disciplines are learned. At the end, the first section of the medical examination, the physical examination, takes place.
In the clinical studies, theoretical knowledge in the clinical subjects as well as practical knowledge is acquired within the framework of an internship. At the end, the second section of the medical examination takes place, the first state examination.
In the PJ, the practical year, activities in the university or teaching clinic prepare you for later work as an assistant doctor. At the end of this, the third section of the medical examination takes place, the second state examination.

Doctors examine patients, collect findings, evaluate the results, diagnose diseases, determine therapeutic measures and carry out medical treatments and interventions. They advise patients on health care and guide preventive measures. They also do organizational and administrative work.
Due to the large number of different clinical pictures, the job profile is divided into a large number of different specialist areas and possible uses:
- Doctor in the departments of a hospital or in your own practice according to the specialization acquired
- Work in the medical and rescue service, in health authorities, in large companies as a company doctor, in nursing homes
- Work in medical research and teaching
- Use in the pharmaceutical industry and in human pharmacology

The practical year, as the last year of medical studies, includes a connected practical training of 48 weeks at the home university, a teaching hospital of the home university or in other university hospitals or teaching hospitals of other universities up to the third part of the medical examination. It is divided into three sections of 16 weeks each (internal medicine, surgery, general medicine or one of the other specialist areas).

The training content is based on the Approbation regulations for doctors (ÄAppO).
In the pre-clinical course (pre-clinical), you will primarily be taught the scientific basics for the clinical disciplines, thereby ensuring clinical references. It ends with the first section of the medical examination (Physikum).
Evidence of three-month nursing service and participation in the first aid course are prerequisites for admission to the first section of the medical examination. Furthermore, proof of participation (with proof of performance) in an internship in medical terminology must be provided.
Note: You can only start clinical studies after successfully passing the first section of the medical examination.
In the clinical study (clinic) you will learn the necessary specialist knowledge in the clinical subjects and can combine this with practical work components. The aim of the clinical studies is to draw your attention to interdisciplinary concerns and problems and to involve you in scientific work and medical research in suitable areas. A total of four months of clinical traineeship must be completed during the clinical part of the study in the non-teaching times.
The internship is divided into the following sections (§ 7 Para. 2 ÄAppO):
- one month (30 calendar days) in a medically managed outpatient care facility or in a suitable medical practice
- two months (60 calendar days)in a hospital or inpatient rehabilitation facility
- one month in a primary care facility. Only doctors who are listed in Section 73, Paragraph 1a, Numbers 1 – 4 of the German Social Code (SGB V) are considered to be “facilities providing general practitioner care”.
- GPs
- Paediatricians
- internists without a specialization who have chosen to participate in primary care
- Doctors who are entered in the medical register according to Section 95a Paragraphs 4 and 5, Sentence 1 SGB V and
- Doctors who participated in general practitioner care on 12/31/2000
Regular and proper participation in the training must be proven by certificates when registering for the second section of the medical examination.
Medical studies conclude with a university degree (state examination).

Leipzig UniversityFounded in 1409, Leipzig is the second oldest German university with continuous teaching. Until the founding year, the beginnings of medical education can be traced back. Since 1415, the Medical Faculty exists in its own organizational form.
Today, with more than 100 professors, it is the largest of a total of 14 faculties. It is a training center for around 3,000 students of human and dental medicine. In addition, it is one of the largest research institutions in Saxony and deals with almost all scientific areas of medicine. It is being researched at an international level.
