Программа обучения "Microbiology" в Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Microbiology

Microbiology is the science and study of microorganisms, i.e. organisms that cannot be examined as individuals with the naked eye. The students of the international Master's program Microbiology acquire in-depth knowledge in the field of microbiology, especially in the areas of molecular microbiology, microbial physiology and biotechnology as well as microbial ecology.

Описание программы обучения "Microbiology"

Microbiology is the science and study of microorganisms, i.e. organisms that cannot be examined as individuals with the naked eye. These include bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, prions, protozoa and algae, collectively referred to as "microbes". These microbes play key roles in the areas of nutrient cycling, biodegradation/biodegradation, climate change, food spoilage, disease cause and control, and biotechnology. Thanks to their versatility, microorganisms can be used in a wide range of applications: to produce life-saving medicines, to produce biofuels, to clean up environmental pollution, and to manufacture and process food and beverages.

Microbiologists study microbes and research physiology, ecology and the interaction of microorganisms. Their findings rank among some of the most important discoveries in modern human cultural history—Jenner and his smallpox vaccine, Fleming and the discovery of penicillin, Marshall and the identification of the link between Helicobacter pylori infection and peptic ulcer disease.

The students of the international Master's program Microbiology acquire in-depth knowledge in the field of microbiology, especially in the areas of molecular microbiology, microbial physiology and biotechnology as well as microbial ecology. There is a clear research-oriented focus with regard to the diverse areas of application in industry, biotechnology, medicine, pharmacy, food technology, waste management, soil remediation or materials research.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Microbiology"

Microbiology students complete their studies in both Mainz and Dijon and acquire an international double degree in Germany and France.

Стажировки и практика в программе обучения "Microbiology"

As part of the course, students complete two research/laboratory internships. In addition, it is recommended to complete further voluntary internships during the lecture-free period, especially between the third and fourth semester.

Учебный план программы обучения "Microbiology"

The course is highly practice-oriented and is mainly based on laboratory and research internships, which are accompanied by lectures and seminars. The students therefore not only acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge in the various sub-areas of microbiology, but above all practical knowledge. The clear learning objective of the course is to guide the students to independent scientific work in practice and theory, which qualifies them optimally for various professional fields in science and industry on the international job market.

The students complete the modules of the first semester at JGU and the
Modules of the second semester at the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, France (uB). The courses for the third semester are offered at both JGU and uB. In the fourth semester, the students choose whether they want to complete their master's thesis at uB or at JGU. At the end of the fourth semester there is a symposium with presentations of the master's theses and an oral examination.

In the last 10 years, a fundamental change has taken place in biology as molecular methods have entered every biological discipline. Today, molecular methods are not only used in biochemistry, genetics or cell biology, but also in physiology, developmental biology, neuroscience and behavioral research, as well as in morphology, systematics, taxonomy and ecology. Since research is carried out equally on animals, plants, microorganisms and humans using molecular and cell-biological methods, the previous barriers between the classic subjects of botany, zoology, anthropology and microbiology have largely fallen. This has led to an amazing permeability of the biological subjects for those biologists who are trained in molecular biology. For this group, the professional prospects have improved significantly as a result. At the same time, the current genome and proteome research in connection with biomedicine has increased the need for specialists of all kinds who are thoroughly trained in the application of molecular biological methods.
