The Biology Center at the University of Kiel (CAU) welcomes you to the webpages of the new Master curriculum in Molecular Biology and Evolution (MAMBE)! The Master curriculum begins every winter semester. It is an international program, taught entirely in English, and it is based on the fruitful collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön. Together with further collaborations (with the Leibniz Science Campus EvoLUNG (Evolutionary Medicine of the Lung), and also the Collaborative Research Centre 1182, Origin and Function of Metaorganisms), it specifically combines the areas of evolution and molecular biology - a combination which has emerged as an extremely successful interdisciplinary research field in recent years but has not yet been available in academic education.

Graduates of the Molecular Biology and Evolution degree program are well prepared for PhD in molecular biology and related fields, evolutionary biology and ecology, as well as in interdisciplinary biological specialties.

In addition, graduates will also have very good job prospects in the following areas:

  • in research and development or product development in industry (pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, medicine) or agriculture (e.g., animal breeding, plant breeding)
  • in the service sector (e.g., development of diagnostic procedures, clinical studies, plant research, e.g., large-scale screening phenotyping)
  • in the public sector (eg at research institutes or universities)
  • Special qualification through interdisciplinary training: mastery of evolutionary algorithms for product development and optimization or prediction and analysis of dynamic biological systems such. B. pathogens; Competencies in statistical and computer-based methods for the evaluation of biological problems; Competencies in Molecular Biology Methods

MAMBE graduates will be very well prepared for a doctorate in an interdisciplinary biological research field and, as such, are also highly attractive for industry, small companies or governmental offices that are active in one of the following fields: Research and development of new products, possibly using evolutionary principles for product improvement, in biology, medicine or related field (e.g., pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, medicine) and also agriculture (animal and plant breeding); Service sector (e.g., development of diagnostics, implementation of clinical studies, large scale screening); and also Governmental sector (as biologists in public authorities, research institutes or universities).

Учебный план программы обучения "Molecular Biology and Evolution"

The study volume comprises approximately 100 semester credit hours (SWS) and 120 credit points including 30 credit points (CP) for the Master's thesis.

The master's program Molecular Biology and Evolution covers two main topics:

  • Evolution of organisms and molecules
  • Molecular biology of dynamic processes

In the first three semesters, the following modules have to be completed with a total of 90 credits:

  • two basic compulsory modules each with 10 credits for the two main topics (1st and 2nd semester)
  • three elective modules, each with 5 credits for the first main topic and three elective modules, each with 5 credits for the second main subject (1st and 2nd semesters)
  • a compulsory module "Scientific Presentation and Management" with 10 credits (1st and 2nd semester)
  • two research modules each with 10 credits (3rd semester)
  • a module on "Development of a scientific project" with 10 LP (3rd semester)

The master thesis is written in the 4th semester.

The module examinations determine whether the student has achieved the learning objectives of a module. The module examinations take place during the course of studies and may consist of one or more examinations. The type and number of examinations to be performed depend on the subject examination regulations.

The Master's examination is passed if all the module examinations and the work required by the subject examination regulations have been passed and the required number of credit points have been earned.

The standard period of study for the one-subject Master's program Molecular Biology and Evolution is 4 semesters.
