The Master's program has an academic as well as a professional orientation. In the Fast-Track-Doctoral Stream you have the opportunity to work towards a doctoral dissertation. During your theoretical and empirical training you will deepen your knowledge about the structure and the functioning of public administration from the local to the global level. You will reflect on the interdependencies of structures and actors of public policy as well as on the explanatory power of core theoretical concepts and the feasibility of research designs. The interdisciplinary orientation of the program is a great advantage here, as it allows you to connect knowledge from political science and law, from sociology and economics. The focus is on the simultaneous empirical use of and critical reflection on acquired theoretical knowledge. The program also focuses on deepening your knowledge of social science methods with regard to qualitative and quantitative analysis. This training is closely tied to the current research done in the faculty.

During your studies you will engage with core topics in political and administrative science research from an international and comparative perspective. The focus is on empirical projects in the areas of administration, public policy, management, and governance using qualitative and quantitative methods and drawing on subject-specific theoretical knowledge.You will build and expand your knowledge about modes of governance, of public administration, structures and development of political systems in the 21st century, and the role of civil society interest groups in a national and international or supranational context; you will also gain deeper insight into the underlying legal frameworks. Furthermore, the elective modules make it possible to set your own focus, for example on questions of modernization of state and administration (e.g. administrative reforms), digitalization in state and administration, global crisis management, policy field analysis (e.g. municipal policy fields) and democracy research. In addition, you will expand your expertise in research methods and practice.The Master's program has an academic as well as a professional orientation.     Die Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultät der Universität Potsdam (WiSo-Fakultät) wurde im Jahr 1991 gegründet und ist am Standort Griebnitzsee angesiedelt. Sie umfasst die Bereiche Wirtschaftswissenschaften (Betriebswirtschaftslehre sowie Volkswirtschaftslehre), Sozialwissenschaften (Politik und Verwaltung sowie Soziologie) (zur Übersicht der Professuren). Besonders stolz sind wir auf das vom DFG geförderte Graduiertenkolleg "Wicked Problems, Contested Administrations" (WIPCAD).

    You have to meet the following requirements to be admitted to the Master’s Degree Program in National and International Administration and Policy:

    a) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

    A Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent university degree, in a course of study in administration, policy, or law, if this course of study

    • includes a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters,
    • includes a total of at least 180 credit points (CP), and
    • a total of 30 CP in three of the following key areas of political science (political theory, policy and governance in Germany and Europe, comparative political studies, international policy, and admin-istration and public policy), as well as a total of 10 CP in empirical social re-search and scholarship methods in the social sciences, were earned in this course of study.

    If the transcript comes from a system that does not use credit points, then the Examining Board will make a decision about the equivalence of academic performance.

    b)   Degree of a foreign university

    A degree at a university abroad, insofar as there is no essential difference between the qualifications earned abroad and those available in Germany.

    c)    English language skills

    English language skills that correspond at least to Level C 1 of the Common European Framework for Languages. You have to provide evidence of your language proficiency by submitting the respective certificates. The following certificates are considered being proof of the C 1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:

    •  UNIcert with at least III 
    • TOEFL Internet-Based Test with at least 95 points
    • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English with at least mark B
    • IELTS with at least 6.5 points and at least 6.0 points in each part of the test
    • Certificate on completion of a course of studies in English at a recognized academic institution.

    The Examining Board issues decisions re-garding credentials on a case by case basis.

     

    d)   German language skills

    German language skills are not required.

    Admission Procedure

    An admission procedure is required for each Master’s degree program with admission restrictions if the number of applicants exceeds the number of places at the university. A ranking list will be prepared as part of this procedure, which is based on agreed eligibility criteria. You will find the respective criteria for the Master’s Degree Program National and International Administration and Policy in the Specific Admission and Enrollment Regulations. 

    If you have applied for the summer semester, you will usually get a decision at the end of February/ beginning of March. For the winter semester, decisions will be usually sent at the end of July.
