Pharmaceutical biotechnology includes the use of biotechnological methods and processes in the context of medical applications. According to the color of the blood, this branch of biotechnology is also known as red biotechnology. The subject of pharmaceutical biotechnology is the use of the catalytic properties of biomolecules, cells and organisms, which are often optimized by genetic engineering methods, for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products and the development of diagnostic processes.

Based on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the regulation of metabolic processes and their pathological changes in the development of diseases, therapeutically effective substances are sought and biotechnological processes for their production are developed. Pharmaceutical biotechnologists also play a key role in the development and biotechnological production of diagnostics and vaccines. You are also qualified to make a relevant contribution to the development of microarray techniques, biosensors, analysis techniques and diagnostic devices.

The master’s course in pharmaceutical biotechnology has a standard period of four semesters. In the first three semesters, there is an in-depth, scientifically-oriented training in core biotechnological areas such as genetic engineering, enzyme technology, recombinant products, low-molecular active pharmaceutical ingredients and molecular medicine. Application-oriented teaching content is taught in engineering subjects such as bioprocess engineering, bioprocess development, cell culture technology and bioprocess control.

In the third semester you also have the opportunity to specialize in elective modules based on your individual interests. The master's thesis is written in the fourth semester. The aim is the independent scientific work on a topic of basic research or applied research. The master's thesis is usually written in a company or in a university-internal / external research facility and supervised by professors from the medical engineering and biotechnology department.

    In the Faculty of Medical Technology and Biotechnology of the Ernst Abbe University of Jena, we offer our students a wide range of scientific, medical and technical skills in the scientific center of Thuringia.

    In the medical technology and biotechnology bachelor's degree programs, the focus is on engineering training. For example, medical technology students acquire a broad knowledge of medical device technology and development, as well as the processing and interpretation of biosignals. Our in-depth Master’s degrees in Medical Technology and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology build on these skills and abilities. The pharmaceutical-biotechnology course with its content is unique in Central Germany. The focus here is on biotechnological applications in human medicine. During the course of their studies, students develop a broad understanding of the development of diseases and the mechanisms of action of numerous pharmaceutical products.

    It goes without saying that all of our courses were successfully reaccredited by the ACQUIN reaccreditation agency in 2019.

    Successful admission also includes a positive result in the internal selection process. The following features are taken into account.

    • The overall grade of the bachelor's or diploma degree (max. 65 points)
    • Publications, posters or scientific lectures (up to 10 points)
    • Substance and persuasiveness of the letter of motivation (up to 5 points)
    • Vocational training and professional experience in the biotechnological field (up to 10 points)
    • Subject-specific additional qualifications in the biotechnological field (up to 10 points)
    • Recommendations from the academic reviewers (up to 10 points)

    For admission, the applicant must achieve at least 60 out of a maximum of 110 points.
