This course opens up many professional fields for students, as they are introduced to everyday professional life, qualifications and practical relevance during the course of their studies. Successful completion of the Master’s program in Pharmaceutical Sciences qualifies both for an activity in scientific research (and thus for a doctorate) and for a specialization in the pharmaceutical industry; however, it does not lead to a license to practice as a pharmacist. The degree program mainly focuses on drug research and the process to market maturity, but you can also apply your specialist field to other professional fields, for example in journalism.

Учебный план программы обучения "Pharmaceutical Sciences"

The research-oriented and interdisciplinary Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences combines specialist knowledge from the various areas of pharmacy with methodological skills and practical relevance. It is divided into 4 semesters. After various courses on pharmaceutical fundamentals, you finally choose your specialization in the third semester and write your master's thesis in the fourth semester.

The first two semesters serve the basic areas of pharmacy. You will attend the following courses:

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry (12 ECTS)
  • Pharmaceutical Biology (12 ECTS)
  • Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology (12 ECTS)
  • Bioinformatics (6 ECTS)
  • Biochemistry (6 ECTS)
  • Pharmacology (6 ECTS)

In the method course (6 ECTS) you will also gain insights into working with pharmaceutical measuring devices, evaluate results, learn about different working methods, analysis and problem-solving strategies and deal with literature research. You also have the opportunity to gain insights into the economy from various speakers as part of the lecture series "Industry Lecture"

In your 3rd semester, select your specialization from the two offered profile line n.

Drug Discovery and Delivery deals with the development and mode of action of drugs. You will do two research internships , in which you will work practically in current pharmaceutical research areas. This includes literature research, the application of research methods and laboratory technology, documentation and evaluation of experiments as well as the evaluation of results. You will also take a compulsory elective module with which you can deepen your interests.

The second profile line Regulatory Affairs and Drug Development is a unique opportunity to specialize in Germany and focuses on the development process through to approval and market readiness of a drug. In the Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs module, the process of drug development is introduced to you by various speakers from pharmaceutical companies. In the Ethics and Sustainability module you will learn the basics of ethical argumentation principles and the problems of modern biomedical research. You acquire the legal fundamentals for the production and marketing of drugs in the Patent Law and Production Strategy module and basic knowledge of pharmaceutical quality requirements in the Quality module. In addition, you will deal with aspects of public relations, such as the media presentation of the new drug and the appearance towards media representatives and dealing with the press through the Media and Communication .

The Regulatory Affairs and Drug Development profile line combines the common interest of the closer cooperation between industry and university and enables students, companies and everyday work to get to know drug development. Speakers from small and medium-sized companies as well as large corporations contribute to the teaching. The direct practical relevance can offer students the opportunity to write their master’s thesis in a company that may even take it over later.

Finally, the fourth semester is used to write your Master's thesis amounting to 30 ECTS.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences degree program guides students to work independently, experimentally and scientifically and promotes their individual profile development . While you acquire theoretical knowledge at the university, you will gain practical insights into research institutions and you can also achieve achievements through a semester abroad. The University of Freiburg also offers you an ideal location, because many different pharmaceutical companies of all sizes are located within the border triangle, many of which cooperate with the university.
