The Bachelor's program in Philosophy - Arts - Media (B.A.) is aimed at prospective students who want to complete a theoretically demanding course in preparation for activities in the fields of science, culture or the media. For this purpose, the main subject philosophy is combined with a scientific-artistic subject and further study parts relevant for cultural practice.

In addition to imparting basic theoretical skills and knowledge from philosophy and cultural studies, the program also includes practical exercises and projects. This serves the targeted qualification for activities in science, for cultural and media work and other professional fields. The argumentative handling of practical problems and acting in decision-making situations are practiced and at the same time philosophically reflected.

The Philosophy-Arts-Media course is designed consecutively. After completing the bachelor’s degree, the course can be continued with the corresponding master’s course. In addition, this Bachelor course opens up further opportunities. In principle, the main subject can be deepened by any master's program in philosophy. Those who want to concentrate more on their minor subjects after completing their bachelor's degree can continue their studies in the fields of art and media studies, journalism or cultural management. Of course, the bachelor is already a first professional qualification. This makes it possible to enter the job market after the bachelor's degree - be it to gain further experience on the way to a master's degree or to establish itself there permanently. The cultural and media sector is the most important, but by no means the only, professional field. A degree in Philosophy-Arts-Media is connectable for many career paths - be it in research, publishing, journalism, radio and television or in press and public relations. Galleries, museums, theaters and other cultural institutions are also possible employers, either in the context of activities in cultural management or also in cultural mediation and adult education. Those who discover and develop their artistic and practical skills during their studies may decide to pursue a career as a writer or for film production.

Structure of the course

The Bachelor's degree in Philosophy-Arts-Media is made up of four study areas:

  1. the philosophy department [major]
  2. a scientific-artistic field of study, optionally literature, theater, media studies, visual arts or music,
  3. the department of cultural organization and
  4. the field of key qualifications.

The study structure in the Bachelor course is modular, i.e. Thematically related courses form modules with clearly defined learning objectives. Examinations take place at the end of the semester or during a course of study. For the academic achievements (e.g. successful participation in courses, a passed exam or homework) you will receive so-called credit points [LP] depending on the workload. In order to successfully complete your studies with the Bachelor of Arts, you need a total of 180 credit points.

Composition of the study areas

Department of Philosophy

Contains modules on the logic of language, on dealing with basic questions of epistemology and theoretical philosophy as well as on the basics of practical philosophy. Additional modules are devoted to aesthetics, perception and art philosophy, culture and the media, as well as reading and discussing current and classic philosophical texts. The final module (Bachelor thesis, Bachelor colloquium) also belongs to this area. The study area comprises a total of 9 modules, in which a total of 90 credit points must be achieved.

Scientific and artistic field of study

One of the following five subjects can be chosen as a scientific-artistic minor: literature, theater, media studies, visual arts, music. The minor studies combine both theoretical and practical elements, which are divided into four to five modules depending on the chosen subject. One of these is an interdisciplinary project module that is offered in every second summer semester [projekt semester]. This area comprises 42 credit points.

Study area cultural organization

The cultural organization course consists of three modules with a total of 24 credit points. A basic module with events on cultural policy is mandatory. Then there is a choice between advanced modules on cultural policy, cultural management or the theory and practice of cultural determination. You can also choose between modules that teach the basics of business administration or organizational pedagogy.

Key Qualifications study area

The "Key Qualifications" course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop their own profile. For example, it is conceivable to acquire further qualifications in language courses, in the IT area, in presentation techniques, but also to deepen a module in the area of ​​cultural policy and culture management. A binding part of this field of study is a job-oriented internship with a duration of once 12 weeks or twice 6 weeks. A total of 24 HP must be achieved in this area.
