Physics of Life

Through a sound education in physics, biology and materials science from the molecular, cellular and tissue-specific perspective, i. H. Using the wide variety of modern measurement methods (e.g. single molecule measurements), analysis methods (e.g. quantitative image analysis) and theoretical methods (e.g. biological, statistical physics), the students are able to quantitatively describe the physics of living systems to understand, to adapt and further develop for technical processes. The students know the basics of experimental biophysics, theoretical biophysics and nanobiotechnology and can use experimental and theoretical approaches to better characterize and understand complex molecular machines, processes in cells and tissue formation and to use them in technological systems. They have an increased profile in the analytical-technical direction, as well as in the theoretical physical description of observations in living systems.

The course is strongly research-oriented. Graduates have the opportunity to continue their careers in basic research in academia, research departments of biotech companies and in research and development departments in biomedical companies (especially in the development of new methods, instruments and medical therapeutics). The majority of graduates go into research and start a doctorate after completing their master's degree.

Учебный план программы обучения "Physics of Life"

The course includes an interdisciplinary education in the field of molecular, cellular and tissue-specific biophysics, under the special aspect of the experimental, theoretical or nanotechnological approach.

The range of courses is spread over three semesters. In the first and second semesters, compulsory courses are offered in the areas of biological physics, physical chemistry and experimental methods, statistical principles, biochemistry and molecular biology, nanobiotechnology, molecular and cellular biophysics as well as molecular nanostructures and machines in theory and experiment. Modern measurement and analysis methods as well as theoretical methods are also part of the course. From the second semester onwards, students choose one of the three specializations experimental biological physics, theoretical biological physics or nanobiotechnology to focus on. In each specialization, a series of compulsory elective courses is offered from which the students can choose.

The third semester, half of which consists of a laboratory project, is very practical.

The fourth semester is used for the preparation of the master's thesis including the holding of the colloquium.

    Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB)

    The Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) focuses on interdisciplinary research and teaching in the life sciences. As a central unit of TU Dresden, the CMCB combines the interdisciplinary institutes B CUBE, BIOTEC and CRTD, and has close links to multiple schools and faculties at TU Dresden. The CMCB aims at creating synergies among intra- and extramural institutes in Dresden to provide an internationally oriented academic environment with cutting-edge research and innovative teaching programs at all levels. State-of-the-art technologies are made available to the TU Dresden campus as well as to DRESDEN-concept partners via the CMCB Technology Platform, which consists of a wide range of high-end core facilities, and innovative discoveries will be developed further towards commercial applications. Administrative support is provided to all CMCB research groups by centralized service units, which act as interfaces to the central administration of TU Dresden.
