Описание программы обучения "Public Health"

Public health, also known as health sciences, deals in practice, research and teaching with the conditions for health and the management of illness, insofar as they are based on the natural, technical and social environment of people.

Various factors influence the health of a population. The health system, the supply structures, the financing of health services, the political and social framework and also the health behavior of the population play a decisive role. Public health is an interdisciplinary subject that develops solutions for improving the health situation in society as a whole through the scientific cooperation of different disciplines. The current tasks of public health move in the connection of health research, social medicine, health system and health care research and health-related technology assessment.

Epidemiological methods are used for public health in order to analyze the political and economic framework conditions of a population group in terms of health at the population level, to examine the systems of health care, to consider the interactions between people and their environment, to research the social structures and health-related behavior of society and to consider the implementation of medical findings in society as a whole.

Public health has a health-promoting and disease-preventing orientation. The interactive cooperation of different disciplines offers starting points for their implementation. Human biology identifies and recognizes the diseases of our time. Quantitative disciplines such as epidemiology and statistics allow us to see the spread of diseases in populations and risk groups beyond the individual. The social sciences offer insight into social, economic and political structures that help determine the health of population groups. Health-related behaviors and different lifestyles can be further explained through disciplines such as psychology. Educational sciences offer strategies to implement knowledge about health and public health concepts such as 'empowerment' in different population groups.

Public health is practice-oriented. One of the tasks of public health is to have an effect on real conditions and to influence and change them. This can be done by taking on management functions in the healthcare sector, by working on a political level or by researching, evaluating and disseminating health science concepts.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Public Health"

A funded exchange via Erasmus is possible for MScPH students. In return, we welcome students from Erasmus partner universities in the MScPH!

In addition, all students have the opportunity to choose from a large number of public health-related summer schools and intensive short courses abroad on their own initiative and to integrate them into their studies via elective or specialization modules.

Учебный план программы обучения "Public Health"

The MScPH is designed as a full-time course. Every semester there are daily courses of around 20 hours with compulsory attendance. In addition, there are about 20 hours of preparation and follow-up time per week, resulting in a student workload (Student Investment Time, SIT) of about 40 hours per week. With the aim of being family-friendly, courses take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Each semester consists of 15 semester weeks of lecture time followed by a lecture-free period in which examinations and homework are completed.

16 modules of 6 ECTS each are completed as part of the course. Two basic modules serve to create a balance of knowledge between the disciplines of origin of the students. The two core modules serve to identify with the subject area, to raise ethical awareness of overarching public health issues and current public health challenges. The eight focus modules serve to deepen and expand specialist scientific skills in the areas of research methods, determinants of health, health system research and management as well as health promotion and prevention. Three advanced modules are used for individual specialization. They can be freely chosen from other courses offered by Berlin universities or other universities, also abroad, provided there is a link to public health. The Master's thesis (24 ECTS) and the accompanying colloquium form the conclusion of the course.

Students who are unable to study full-time due to an additional burden, e.g. due to family, employment or relatives who have to be cared for, have the option of applying for a part-time study place. The application must be submitted before the start of the semester. If you study part-time, the course is extended to 8 semesters. Every semester, students register their desired modules of 12 or 18 ECTS at the examination office.
