The aim of the consecutive Master’s Social Work is to prepare professional practice in managerial functions of social work by conveying scientific content and methods with interdisciplinary references and a practical orientation.
The Master in Social Work is application-oriented, but also keeps the perspective of research open. In the course of study, students should acquire the ability to deepen or expand their social work skills through a broad, detailed and critical understanding of the latest knowledge, in order to better identify problems, needs and wishes of the addressees of social work and the best possible help to be able to provide.

Fields of activity and job profiles
The master’s degree is generalist, not narrowly specialized and is intended to qualify you for activities as a specialist or manager in all professional fields of social work. The Master in Social Work is primarily application-oriented, but also keeps the perspective of research and doctorate open.
Further qualification options after the master’s degree
With the master’s degree, you can meet the formal requirements for a possible subsequent doctorate. This can be done either in a structured doctoral college or as an individual, cooperative doctorate (by a supervisor at a HAW and a university) within the framework of the agreements between universities and HAW in the Free State of Bavaria. Subsequent training as a child and adolescent psychotherapist is also possible.

Master's thesis
In the 3rd semester you will deepen your technical knowledge through the master's thesis. You deal independently with a current research or development topic and show that you are able to work on a task from social work independently using scientific methods.
Additional qualifications
For students of the faculty, further qualifications are offered in addition to the undergraduate degree. On the one hand, there is the possibility of having relevant study achievements recognized for the certification process to become a specialist social worker at the Central Office for Clinical Social Work (ZKS) in Coburg. On the other hand, practice-oriented further qualifications are offered that conclude with their own university certificate. The following certificate courses are currently offered:
- Qualification to become an online consultant. This qualification corresponds to the guidelines for training online counselors of the German-speaking Society for Psychosocial Online Counseling (DGOB) and is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for E-Counseling
- Basic qualification experiential education in cooperation with the Society for the Promotion of Adventure Education e. V.
- Basic qualification in media consulting in cooperation with the Parabol media center
- Basic project management qualification in cooperation with the Institute for Social and Cultural Work (ISKA)
