The Bachelor Degree Program in Theater, Film and Media Studies (hereinafter referred to as TFM) deals with aesthetic phenomena, semantic contents and communicative processes in the field of theater, film and the media. It is divided into examined objects as well as a number of cross-cutting topics and questions. In an interdisciplinary perspective in research and teaching, TFM deals with aesthetic, pragmatic and historical dimensions of theatrical and media phenomena as well as the genealogy, structure and artistic practices of contemporary theater, film and media culture. Fields of investigation of the TFM include the history, theory and aesthetics of cinematic, theatrical, medial and generally performative forms of representation as well as their institutional, social, technical and economic prerequisites and conditions of effect. Subject of the study program are current and future artistic and media developments. The study combines theoretical and analytical-descriptive with practical forms of work. In addition, theatrical, film and media-related contributions from other disciplines are also included. It is advisable to study the bachelor's degree in combination with Philosophy, German Studies, Romance Studies, English Studies, American Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Art History, Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology, and Musicology as a minor subject

The Bachelor in Theater, Film and Media Studies enables you to study for a Master’s degree at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies or a related degree program at other universities according to the respective conditions.

Fields of activity

A degree in theater, film and media studies does not lead to a single established profession, but qualifies for a broad professional field. Students do not have to commit themselves to a specific career path at the beginning of their studies.

In addition to activities in research and at universities, the fields of work are in cultural promotion and politics, in festival and event culture, in archives and museums, in cultural management and in cultural mediation, in information media and in public relations.

It is recommended to take advantage of opportunities to study abroad for study purposes. This also includes participation in language courses, exchange programs, internships abroad or other stays. We particularly recommend studying abroad for at least one semester, preferably 3-5. Semester. Study and examination achievements made abroad are recognized individually. It is recommended that you conclude a learning agreement before starting your studies abroad to ensure that your work abroad is recognized.

The Bachelor major in Theater, Film and Media Studies consists of a basic phase (1st-2nd semester) and a qualification phase (3rd-6th semester). In the basic phase, the technical fundamentals of TFM are taught. Building on these principles, the students expand and deepen the knowledge they have acquired in the qualification phase. In this part of the study, the theoretical examination of the contents of the TFM is supplemented by practical testing in internal and non-university projects.

    The ranking of the applicants is based on the average grade of the university entrance qualification and the internship described in point I.3.1 of the subject-specific appendix for the Bachelor's degree in Theater, Film and Media Studies in the main subject to the framework for the Bachelor's degree in Faculty 10. If the average grade of the university entrance qualification is equivalent, priority is given to whoever completed the internship. You can see the reference values on the following page.
