Transforming City Regions (TCR) is an interdisciplinary master's program that focuses in particular on the European dimensions of spatial development. It was developed in view of the environmental, social, technological and economic challenges facing Europe's changing cities and regions today. A technology-supported, solution-oriented approach is pursued that enables students to identify social needs, develop an understanding of economic aspects and thus contribute to solving the above-mentioned challenges. The language of instruction is English throughout.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Transforming City Regions"

Due to the interdisciplinary approach and the European focus of the course, graduates are ideal for careers in the following areas:

  • In the private sector: development and urban planning agencies, investment banks, as well as companies, institutions and research institutes in the fields of technical infrastructure, territorial analysis and structural funds
  • Authorities and public bodies at local, regional, national and international level
  • Civil society organizations such as covering a wide range of urban issues.

The content and qualification goals and the modules of the course do not take into account the requirements of the professional chambers for urban planners or the European and international training guidelines. This means that the chance of being entered in the town planner lists of the chambers of architects is not guaranteed.

Учебный план программы обучения "Transforming City Regions"

Transforming City Regions is a four-semester course. The structure of the first three semesters is the same: students acquire half of the credit points in integrated projects that deal with complex urban and urban development problems; here the perspective widens from the city and the region to the European perspective.

You earn the other half of the credit points in compulsory modules, optional courses, a research module, an excursion, an external course and two spontaneously organized courses. In the fourth semester, the students write their master's thesis.

The European orientation manifests itself on three different levels:

  • Involvement of teachers from across Europe
  • Collaboration with European institutions, organizations and industrial companies
  • European case studies in integrated projects

The following components must be completed during the course:

  • 8 compulsory modules
  • 3 built-in projects
  • 2-3 elective courses
  • 1 research module
  • 1 module consisting of a compulsory field trip and two spontaneously organized elective courses
  • 1 external course

The compulsory courses can last for one or two semesters. Alternatively, however, they are offered in the form of block courses within a few weeks. It is therefore possible to divide the 30 attendance hours into 3 to 8 block sessions (instead of 2 weekly hours spread over the 15-week semester).

The English taught master programme “TRANSFORMING CITY REGIONS” at RWTH Aachen University was launched in the winter semester 2019/20. The high demand from students from Germany, Europe and, last but not least, the whole world shows that the content orientation of the degree programme towards international transformation processes was well-chosen. Students from the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, landscape planning, civil engineering, geography, and cultural studies have been very successful in the past semesters in dealing with concepts and strategies in urban design and in neighbourhood, city and regional development.

This has involved an intensive examination of the major challenges of transformation – urbanisation in the form of reurbanisation and suburbanisation as well as the reshaping of entire regions, such as the lignite mining region in the Rhineland. Above all, there is agreement that transformation processes can only be successfully mastered if the right instruments, concepts and strategies are applied. And many of these challenges and questions for the future can no longer be answered by looking at the local context, but require an international exchange of experience, as is taking place within the framework of the English taught master programme “TRANSFORMING CITY REGIONS” (TCR).

In times of globalisation and increasing networking, knowledge in dealing with international transformation processes is more important than ever. It not only opens up new career prospects for graduates, but also qualifies them in every respect for the future challenges in the broad field of urban and regional planning.

The teaching results presented in the following show how students have dealt with transformation processes at the various spatial scales and levels – from the neighbourhood, to the city, to the region – and how the spatial level can be successfully linked with the strategic level.

    Faculty of Architecture
    RWTH Aachen University

Today's Faculty of Architecture is located in the Reiff Museum, which was named after Franz Reiff (1835-1902), professor of figure and landscape drawing, and opened in 1908. On the one hand it served as a museum and on the other hand as a training center for architects. In its inventory of almost 300 works of art there were 200 original copies, which served to train architects and art historians. The architectural training, which has existed since 1878, and the town planning training, which has existed since 1965, are among the oldest university courses of their kind in Germany. Its long and - in view of the high demand from prospective students - successful history goes back to the profile of the training: The focus here is on imparting design, artistic and technical knowledge and skills on the basis of social, cultural and ecological responsibility. The growing number of students and the associated lack of space meant that the Reiff was expanded by an extension in the years 1960 to 1963. A little later, further conversions and additions were made. After the death of Franz Reiff and his successor Max Schmid-Burgks, the collection lost importance, so that many works were given away, sold or forgotten. In 2005, a project seminar was founded at the Art History Institute, which is working on the collection again. The inventory of the Reiff Museum can be admired in a virtual museum. Reiff Museum. With the Bologna reform, Aachen also switched to the bachelor's and master's system. A Bachelor of Science in architecture has been offered since the 2006/07 winter semester and a Master of Science in architecture and urban planning since the 2009/10 winter semester. In the future, the university character of the training will be further developed through a stronger link between teaching and research or practice with the help of interfaculty and interdisciplinary cooperation with many neighboring areas inside and outside of RWTH Aachen University.
