Graduates of the master's degree in civil engineering have in-depth technical and economic knowledge at a high level and have organizational and communication skills. You can take on a very wide range of professional fields of activity within the construction and real estate industry and other industries, such as e.g .:

  • in engineering, architecture and project management offices
  • in building authorities of the public service

The master's degree in civil engineering builds on the bachelor's degree in civil engineering or on an equivalent bachelor's degree and leads to a second professional qualification.

After the broad-based training in the bachelor's degree program, which focuses on the essential subject areas of construction, this course content is supplemented and deepened at a high level in the master’s degree. At the same time, a wide range of compulsory and elective subjects imparts special knowledge and methods in four selectable study areas.

In the master’s course, creative, independent and interdisciplinary work is encouraged. The students learn methods of scientific problem solving and acquire the ability to develop, plan, organize and implement complex technical projects holistically also with regard to ecological, social, economic and legal aspects in order to assume their responsibility for people and the environment.

The aim of the course is to produce comprehensively trained graduates who can be employed in all relevant areas of construction. However, each individual is also given the opportunity to deepen the four selectable focal points according to their inclinations.

The training should enable the students in detail,

  • Recognize technical problems and tasks in all their complexity and consider and take into account technical and social consequences
  • to cooperate with specialist colleagues and others in the construction sector and to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • To represent their work to the outside world with arguments and to convince those involved
  • To develop creativity and imagination in the search for problem solutions
  • Developing decisiveness, assertiveness and flexibility
  • To act in the social interest and in an environmentally conscious manner.

The course content corresponds to the current state of science and technology and takes practical requirements into account. Modern computer science methods are used and digital planning and construction are understood as the standard of training for future-oriented graduates. Teaching as well as integrated project and research tasks are supported by the well-equipped laboratories.

The master’s degree deepens all the main subject areas of civil engineering and also contains economic, legal and natural science modules. In addition to the usual lectures, seminars and internships, the knowledge is conveyed through a variety of modern forms of teaching such as simulation games, workshops, projects or e-learning.

Through a targeted offer of compulsory and elective modules for each field of study, both theoretical and practice-oriented components of the course are taken into account.     The roots of building training in Leipzig go back to the year 1764, although it wasn't until 1838, with the establishment of the Royal Saxon Building Trade School, that a scientific orientation in training for the building trade began. The Faculty of Construction thus ties in with a long tradition of various educational institutions, including the College of Construction and the Technical University.
