Broad specialist knowledge is required

PR professionals need to understand how organizations, the media, social networks and the public are related. How do journalists or bloggers choose their topics? Why are certain communication campaigns more successful than others? When is it worthwhile to communicate with social media? How can content be prepared in a cross-media manner? To understand this, PR experts need a sound knowledge of subjects such as communication science, sociology and psychology as well as journalism, economics and management. Because if you don't understand how media work and are used, it will be difficult to convey the content.

Conveying content strategically

Spokespersons and communication managers decide through their work how an organization is perceived by the public. You plan communication campaigns, write press releases, use social media channels or organize events. This is how they “translate” the goals of their organization for journalists, politicians or citizens. PR experts are not just content brokers, they are increasingly becoming advisors to top management on strategic issues. That is why it is important to us that our graduates master both: the craft of communication but also strategic thinking.

The PR industry is an attractive and growing professional field for our graduates. You plan communication strategies and implement them. Typical fields of work are internal and external corporate communication, communication consulting in PR agencies as well as corporate publishing or online communication. Our students can go abroad for up to a year without interrupting their studies. The practical semester in the fifth semester can be completed in companies worldwide. This can then be followed by the sixth semester at a foreign partner university. Those who do not go abroad attend English-language courses together with exchange students and work in international teams - also in Stuttgart.

Then take advantage of the integrated study abroad at one of 80 partner universities worldwide and get to know new cultures. The crowning glory of the course is the bachelor thesis.

The Public Relations course in the Crossmedia Editing / Public Relations course is broadly based and combines theory and practice. The course prepares graduates to solve communication problems in companies.

Three fields of competence structure the course:

  • Understand the communication context
    Understanding of media and communicative processes and their effects in business, politics and society; Research methods and problem-solving skills
  • Develop strategies
    Analysis, planning and control of communication processes, project and innovation management, business administration, law
  • Realize content
    Use of editorial work techniques (text and conception), cross-media design of communication strategies on platforms such as web, print, audio and video

You learn how the media, their content and the public work. In a very practical and not just theoretical way: What makes good content, how can it be disseminated and how does it go down well with the audience?

Practical craft: You will learn everything you need to survive in an editorial office, communications department or agency.

Understand target groups: Your audience decides whether a piece of content is good. That's why you can analyze well who your target group is and what makes them tick.

Cross-media: Content can be told as text or prepared as a photo, video, audio or infographic. With us you will get to know the strengths of all these channels.

Digital competence: You will learn to deal with data, to question it critically and to visualize it. Fake news don't stand a chance with you.

    You can improve your Abi average for the application under special circumstances: By up to 0.5 points if you have completed an editorial internship. By up to 0.3 points if you have trained in journalism or PR. And by up to 0.1 points if you can describe other professional experiences in a letter of motivation that make you the ideal candidate for our degree program. The selection committee for our degree program will decide on this when you upload the relevant documents with your application. If you want to send us a letter of motivation, please answer the following four questions as concisely as possible:
