Data Science

We live in the age of digitization with all its advantages but also with our own problems. We passionately defend our opinion on social media, rate the vacation photos of our fellow human beings, and consume digital content via our trusted streaming service. We leave a clear digital footprint in the form of data. It is estimated that all of humanity is currently generating a quantity of data of several zettabytes (that's a one with 21 zeros!) Per year. Not every bit and every click is relevant, but based on the amount of our personal data collected, technological miracles can be performed, but they also raise questions:

  • How does Google know what I want to find right away?
  • Why do more and more items end up in my Amazon shopping cart than I originally wanted to buy?
  • How can Spotify estimate my taste in music so well?
  • Why do fake news spread faster than the truth?
  • How can you use deep learning to teach a computer to beat the world champion in Go?

A few years ago everyone was talking about “Big Data”. The value of data was outweighed by that of gold, and the initial hype sparked a true gold prospect mood in the technology industry.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Data Science"

A bachelor's degree as a data scientist opens up many exciting work areas in which you can contribute your knowledge profitably. You work directly at the interface between man and machine. Here are some exemplary industries with potential employers:

  • Technology sector (e.g. Google, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, SAP, Siemens, etc.)
  • Consulting industry (e.g. McKinsey, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, etc.)
  • Biomedical research companies (e.g. AstraZeneca, Roche, Novartis, Bayer, etc.)
  • Logistics industry (Deutsche Post, UPS, DB Mobility Logistics, etc.)
  • Energy industry (E.ON, RWE, EDF, etc.)
  • Finance and insurance industry (Deutsche Bank, Allianz, Munich Re, etc.)

Due to the high demand for graduates in the field of “data science” - there are an estimated lack of over 100,000 data science experts in Germany alone - young professionals can expect a relatively high starting salary.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Data Science"

The standard period of study for the bachelor's degree is six semesters, whereby a semester in the second or third year of study is specifically intended for the possibility of a semester abroad, such as an ERASMUS semester at another European university.

Учебный план программы обучения "Data Science"

Nowadays it is no longer a question of collecting as much data as possible, but rather of analyzing this data to a reasonable extent and drawing the right conclusions from it. “Big Data” quickly became “Smart Data”. And this is exactly where the newly founded "Data Science" course at FAU comes in:

It represents a key discipline for the digital age at the interface between mathematics and computer science and other subject areas such as the natural, engineering, economics and information sciences. The goal of this bachelor's degree is a solid basic and advanced education in both mathematics and in IT with a strong focus on the requirements of future data scientists. In addition, an application subject is documented in which you can prove your acquired knowledge, e.g. Physics, business informatics, biology or medical technology.

During your studies you will learn:

  • how to categorize and abstract structured and unstructured data sources.
  • which mathematical methods can be used to model and analyze data.
  • how data can be used to calculate future forecasts.
  • what are the consequences for decision making.
  • how to efficiently store and manage large amounts of data.
  • how data can be used for training artificial intelligence.

Факультет

Faculty of Sciences
Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg

The Faculty carries out both fundamental and applied research. This research is highly interdisciplinary, involving not only researchers from the Faculty’s departments but also experts from the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, as well as other national and international institutions. The Faculty is involved in 7 of the University’s 8 Major Research Areas and has also established its own Research Focus Areas which cover a wide range of topics, from communication and signalling to molecular materials and geodynamics, geomaterials and georesources, representation theory, astroparticle physics and optics.

Its students receive an outstanding education in a variety of degree programmes which cover all of the key scientific disciplines, with 11 Bachelor’s and 14 Master’s degree programmes and teaching degrees (Lehramt) for the subjects biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics. The Faculty ensures a close interlinking of research and teaching, allowing new knowledge to be passed directly on to its students. At the same time, students are given intensive support with their final theses which are highly research-based and contribute to the research progress. The Faculty of Sciences also runs the Bavarian elite degree programmes Physics Advanced and Integrated Immunology.
