Integrated Life Sciences: Biology, Biomathematics and Biophysics

The international Integrated Life Sciences master's program was initiated jointly by the departments of biology, physics and mathematics at the Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg. With theoretical and practical courses in modern techniques at the interface between biology and the neighboring life science disciplines, the program takes into account the rapidly developing research in molecular biology, biophysics, systems biology or synthetic biology. All these modern fields require the integration of techniques and methods from different disciplines on different length and time scales, e.g. the function of individual biomolecules can be studied with X-ray diffraction and computer simulations, novel high-resolution microscopy methods are used to track individual molecules in cells, the wealth of data obtained e.g. in modern genomics and metabolomics is processed in the development of modern computer codes.

Research in Integrated Life Sciences at FAU covers areas ranging from single molecule analysis to intact cells and organisms to describe and design biological systems.

Учебный план программы обучения "Integrated Life Sciences: Biology, Biomathematics and Biophysics"

The curriculum of the MSc "Integrated Life Sciences" is research-oriented and closely linked to the current research of the participating research groups at FAU and the MPI for the Physics of Light. Building on a solid foundation in biology, physics and mathematics, it intensifies training in selected modern biophysical methods in small groups of 2-6 students and offers a smooth transition to cutting-edge research within the master's thesis in the second year of the master's program.

During the first year of the 2-year MSc program in Integrated Life Sciences, students choose two out of the three majors or module groups:

  • Mathematical Modeling and Systems Biology,
  • Bioimaging and Biophysics,
  • Biological structures and processes.

Each of these subjects is associated with compulsory and optional theoretical courses and advanced practical training (see below). The Master's thesis in an active research environment in the second year rounds off the MSc program. A total of 120 ECTS are required for the successful completion of the "Integrated Life Sciences" master's degree.

Each student chooses a mentor at the beginning of the master's program. The chosen study program must be approved by the mentor.

The specialization module can be selected from courses and lectures in the fields of biology, mathematics or physics. It serves as preparation for the master's thesis. In addition to working on a scientific project, the module can include in-depth lectures or special seminars from the respective department, which are recommended by the supervisor.

In the research-oriented master's thesis, the student works on a scientific question. The duration is limited to six months (30 ECTS). The master's thesis concludes the scientific education of the master's program Integrated Life Sciences. The thesis can be written in the research groups involved in the curriculum of the MSc ILS.

    Faculty of Sciences
    Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg

The Faculty carries out both fundamental and applied research. This research is highly interdisciplinary, involving not only researchers from the Faculty’s departments but also experts from the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, as well as other national and international institutions. The Faculty is involved in 7 of the University’s 8 Major Research Areas and has also established its own Research Focus Areas which cover a wide range of topics, from communication and signalling to molecular materials and geodynamics, geomaterials and georesources, representation theory, astroparticle physics and optics.

Its students receive an outstanding education in a variety of degree programmes which cover all of the key scientific disciplines, with 11 Bachelor’s and 14 Master’s degree programmes and teaching degrees (Lehramt) for the subjects biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics. The Faculty ensures a close interlinking of research and teaching, allowing new knowledge to be passed directly on to its students. At the same time, students are given intensive support with their final theses which are highly research-based and contribute to the research progress. The Faculty of Sciences also runs the Bavarian elite degree programmes Physics Advanced and Integrated Immunology.
