Flexibility is a key characteristic of the program. Besides six core modules, students are offered a wide range of elective courses to choose from, and courses with varying degrees of abstraction and applicability are also available. The flexible, modular structure of the program allows for a significant amount of specialization in line with individual abilities and interests. For those students who wish to follow a certain study scheme during their Master, the program offers two specializations to choose from: “International Economics and Finance” and “"Economic Policy".Master student Niklas van den Boom"In the years I have studied the MSc in Economics here in Bochum I really enjoyed the large variety of the offered lectures. It doesn´t matter in what topic of economics you want to specialize, the appropriate modules are provided. Furthermore I just made great experiences concerning the professors and their chairs, which are surrounded by qualified and responsible teams, always approachable for the students.”The strong interaction between teaching faculty and students, as well as the small group size, guarantee a stimulating academic environment and optimal learning conditions. Combined with a good knowledge of the English language, the Master in Economics provides students with both theoretical and practical knowledge that is essential to take up interesting positions in the private sector and in public institutions. The program also serves as an excellent preparatory degree for those students wishing to move on to a Ph.D. program. Master student Christopher Krause"I study at Ruhr-University Bochum because the wide range of courses makes it possible to focus on my subjects of interest and to gain further expertise in all fields of economics. The close linkage between theory and empirical work lay the foundation of an interesting Master's program and a professional career in research."

Specialization

Although there are no compulsory modules or specializations in the MSc in Economics, students may want to pursue a certain study scheme. For this purpose the program offers two optional specializations:

  • International Economics and Finance
  • Economic Policy

The specialization International Economics and Finance is devoted to deepening students' knowledge about international and development economics as well as finance and macroeconomics. Aspects covered include the integration of developing countries into the world economy, governance and institutions, poverty traps, macroeconomic distortions, financial crises, and disruptions in financial markets. The International Economics and Finance specialization will appeal particularly to students who expect their future careers to be in international financial organizations, central banks, development banks, commercial banks or international firms.

The specialization Economic Policy focuses on market, regulatory and institutional aspects of policy problems at the micro- and macro-level. Practical applications of economic thought to issues in trade, monetary/finance, growth/development, health and environmental policies will be covered. The Economic Policy specialization will appeal particularly to students who expect their future careers to be in governmental agencies, NGOs, think tanks and economic advisory consultancies.

To pursue one of the two specializations, you have to obtain 40 ECTS (out of 90 ECTS) in modules that count toward that specialization and write your master's thesis in that specialization.

A list of courses that give credit for the specializations can be found in the Student Handbook

Structure

The “Master of Science in Economics” is a two-year (four-semester) degree program. The first three semesters are scheduled for coursework while the fourth semester is reserved for the master’s thesis. A total of 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit points have to be acquired, which implies a workload of 30 ECTS credits per semester. In order to graduate, students need to earn 90 ECTS through coursework and 30 ECTS through the master’s thesis. Considering the variety of courses offered the program differentiates between:

  • Core Modules: Macroeconomics I and II, Microeconomics I and II (5 ECTS per module) and Econometrics and Microeconometrics (10 ECTS per module). Students have to obtain at least 30 ECTS out of the six core modules during their studies. The core modules provide students with a solid knowledge base in economics at master’s level which they can later complement with more specialized electives.
  • Specialized Modules: Every year there are about 20 different specialized economics modules offered in the fields of Applied and Theoretical Microeconomics, Empirical Economics, Energy Economics, International and Development Economics, Macroeconomics and Finance, Economic Policy etc. The class size in specialized modules is usually small (10-30 students).

You can find an overview of all economics modules in the Student Handbook. A detailed timetable of the courses offered during a particular semester can be found on the website of the Dean's Office.

will be sent out by early
    to mid-August
    for the winter semester program
    and by early to
    mid-February

for the summer semester program. German/EU
applicants who are not able to supply their final degree certificates
by the application deadline are admitted conditional upon providing

    You can download your admission
    letter

(admission letters are only available for download and not
mailed through the post!). The time and
place of the official registration/ enrolment period, as well as the
documents required to enroll, will be announced on your admission
letter. If you are an international student, you will also need to take
care of certain formalities, such as health care,
    visa and proof of
    finances.

    Please note that before
enrolment all students have to obtain
    a confirmation letter
from the Master Coordination Office stating that
    they have attended mandatory
    counseling
    (“Obligatorisches
Beratungsgespräch”). Students can receive mandatory counseling on
certain days during the enrolment period. The exact dates will be
announced on our website and on your admission letters.

    Due to
university regulations and the time needed to process all applications,
it is not possible to receive your admission letter before the
application deadline. We are aware that some international students
need to apply for their visas early and therefore wish to obtain their
admission notifications earlier. However, this is not possible, as it
would violate university regulations. We would like to ask all
applicants for patience and to please refrain from asking for special
    treatment.
