The aim of physics is to record states and processes in nature on a quantitative and qualitative level and to describe them using general principles. The basic building blocks of the world around us, the connections between micro- and macrocosm, are explored on different levels.

Учебный план программы обучения "Physics"

Physics as a quantitative natural science thrives on the interplay between theory and experiment, with mathematics providing the common language. The relevant fundamentals are imparted in the bachelor's degree.

In experimental physics, lectures on classical physics - mechanics and thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism as well as optics and wave mechanics - form the basis. Lectures on atomic physics, molecular physics, condensed matter physics and nuclear and elementary particle physics then lead to modern physics. The lectures are accompanied by numerous experiments that illustrate the natural laws discussed.

Solving specific problems is practiced in small exercise groups under the guidance of tutors. Experienced students offer help with their studies in tutorials. In addition, there are laboratory internships closely linked to the lectures, during which the students are introduced to observation and the art of experimentation. Here physical tests are carried out, evaluated and critically assessed in groups of two.

From the second semester onwards there are lectures on theoretical physics, which transition from classical theoretical mechanics and electrodynamics to quantum mechanics and statistical physics.

The students are given the opportunity to supplement the material of the basic canon with a selected research-oriented course from the master’s course (possibly as preparation for it). Alternatively, the scientific-experimental approach can be practiced on smaller, independently developed projects in a project internship or experience in industry or in another institution can be gained in which physical knowledge is required.

Mathematics is an essential part of the first three semesters of the course.

Astronomy, chemistry, computer science, meteorology, business administration / economics or philosophy can be chosen as a minor.

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
    University of Bonn

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was founded in 1936. Previously, her subjects belonged to the Faculty of Arts. Today, it is divided into eight specialist groups: Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics / Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, Pharmacy and Molecular Biomedicine. The range of subjects promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching.

In the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Government and the Länder, the Faculty has been successful on several occasions: with the only excellence cluster in mathematics, the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy and the Cluster ImmunoSensation, which it runs together with the medical faculty. Other graduate schools are the research schools Biotech-Pharma and LIMES Chemical Biology as well as the Bonn-Aachen International Research School at Applied Informatics (B-IT Research School). In addition, the faculty is characterized by four local and six transregional Collaborative Research Centers, which are located in the fields of mathematics, life sciences, physics, chemistry and meteorology. These large research networks enjoy the highest reputation among the funding programs of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
