The Master's degree course Sustainable Structures qualifies graduates for manifold tasks in civil engineering. The areas of activities of the graduates include the entire spectrum of building and planning.

Additional qualification as energy consultant

The contents of the training correspond to the requirements of the “Energy Efficiency Expert List for Federal Funding Programs” booklet. After successful completion, the graduates can therefore receive a final certificate in addition to their master’s degree to be presented to the German Energy Agency (DENA).

Учебный план программы обучения "Sustainable Structures"

The four-semester course (standard period of study) concludes with the internationally recognized Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree. The study program comprises a total of 120 ECTS; the qualification qualifies for higher service and for a doctorate.

After successful completion, the graduates receive a final certificate in addition to the master’s certificate for the qualification as an “energy consultant” and for further submission to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (DENA).

Course content

The course provides comprehensive knowledge of dealing with the following main topics:

  • Conception of buildings taking into account the scarcity of resources and the building life cycle
  • Resources, global shortage of energy, raw materials and building land
  • Environment, global increase in exceptional climate events and the resulting consequences
  • Society, demographic change

The course content is conveyed through lectures, seminars and as part of project work. A selection of compulsory elective modules enables you to deal with special subject areas such as:

    We train professionals, who help develop and shape the future of cities. There are currently 2,900 young men and women enrolled in five Bachelor and nine Master degree courses at one of the largest faculties in the fields of planning and construction in the metropolitan region Frankfurt Rhine/Main.

    We show that knowledge is enhanced through practical projects through intensive lab and project work (German only) and through cooperations with the planning and construction  industry. We train professionals, who help develop and shape the future of cities. Our Research Institute FFin supports the knowledge transfer between research and teaching. This is how we train our graduates to be successful on the labor market in the construction industry of the future. They learn in an energy efficient - sustainable - cross generational manner.

    Методика оценки заявок

    Anyone who has passed the required university degree with an overall grade worse than 2.3 and better than 2.8 can be admitted as part of the special selection procedure according to Paragraphs 7 to 12. The special selection takes into account the special qualifications and special motivation demonstrated in the selection interview.

    For the application, the application for admission must be accompanied by a letter of motivation in which the motives and goals associated with the choice of degree program are presented. In addition, the specific knowledge and skills that qualify for the Master’s degree should be presented.

    If all the necessary evidence is submitted in full and in due time, the examination board will invite you to a selection interview at the university.

    The respective one-on-one interview lasts up to 15 minutes and is recorded. In the conversation, the special professional qualification is to be proven on the basis of subject-specific questions from the areas of basics of building physics and sustainability, from the areas of building construction and building materials science.

    Immediately after the selection interview, the teachers evaluate the special qualification; they agree on a common score. The following applies to the assessment: (a) The special technical qualification from the area of ​​the fundamentals of building physics and sustainability is assessed with a maximum of 5 points (very good fundamentals) to 0 points (insufficient fundamentals). (b) The special technical qualification from the area of ​​the basics of building construction and building materials science is assessed with a maximum of 5 points (very good basics) to 0 points (insufficient basics). A maximum of 10 points can be awarded. Only whole points are allowed.

    The particular motivation is assessed on the basis of the proven course-specific practical experience according to the uninterrupted duration of a course-specific internship or a corresponding activity as follows: with 3 points for a duration of at least 8 weeks and with 6 points for a duration of at least 20 weeks. Practical experience that was completed in the context of the practical phases of a previous bachelor's degree is not taken into account here.

    The points awarded are added up. Those applicants who have achieved a total of at least 8 points will be admitted.
