The study of the subject English is inter- and intradisciplinary aligned and crossed academic training in the fields of British literature and culture, American studies and linguistics with studies in English Didactics and language practice. The program is characterized in particular by the wide range of options within the curriculum: in each area, emphasis can be placed on different seminar topics.

A special focus of Dortmund's English and American Studies is on international exchange relations. English students must spend at least 12 weeks abroad in English-speaking countries during their studies. The possibilities for this are manifold: dozens of US universities, colleges in the UK, Australia and South Africa, school placements in selected English schools, etc. Likewise, students benefit from the large number of exchange students who visit as 'native speaker' seminars in Dortmund.

All courses take place in English; as well all works are written in the foreign language.

The study of English requires a stay of at least 12 weeks in English-speaking countries, which is organisationally and technically enabled and promoted by the Department of English and American Studies.

Based on the competences acquired in the bachelor's program, knowledge in British literature and culture, American studies and linguistics will be further developed. The in-depth study of subject-didactic aspects of the theory and practice of English teaching makes it possible to examine course contents in a practice-oriented manner with regard to their didactic relevance. One focus here is the development of school-specific but also cross-school skills.

The study of language practice continues in depth, so that students who have completed their studies have level C2 of the European Framework of Reference in English. Due to the interlinking of language practice and linguistics from a didactic point of view, graduates are able to plan, carry out and design competent foreign language instruction in the respective relevant developmental stages of learners. Likewise, students in the master's program learn to select and prepare relevant foreign-language material for different levels of learning under literary and cultural didactic questions.

Students are encouraged to set their own thematic priorities in elective compulsory subjects and to apply these in the practical phases; Here they are accompanied by teachers of the subject advisory.
