Works of art are processes that unfold their essence over time. This means a constant new challenge for the work of directors; it makes their work exciting, but also gives them great responsibility. Staging not only requires methodological diversity, but also an understanding of art in a broad aesthetic and social context.
In this sense, at the Institute for Music Theater (IMT), voice, body and scene are mutually related to one another. The aim is to explore aesthetic diversity that includes both traditional and innovative forms of musical theater. It's about promoting the search for new ways of expression and narratives and, in addition to working on the standard repertoire, always creating space for experiments.
The training thus takes into account the changing content and structural conditions under which musical theater is created today. It is based on both artistic and scientific foundations. Theory and practice are closely related to each other.

Rooms for discovery CampusOne - Gottesaue Castle offers unique spatial possibilities such as the multimedia and theater complex MUT, which opened in 2013 as an experimental space for teaching, rehearsals and performances: a Salle Modulable.

Theory and practice - learning landscapes
Karlsruhe is the only music college in Germany to have established a professorship that relates the theory and artistic practice of musical theater. This not only creates methodological diversity in training, but also an understanding of art in a broad aesthetic and social context.
Networking - new media and more
Karlsruhe as a cultural location with the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) and the University of Design (HfG) as a cooperation partner offers international perspectives to test and research new forms of musical theater. There are also in-house collaborations: Institute for Musicology and Music Informatics (IMWI), ComputerStudio, Ensemble for New Music.
From the abundance - training in the middle of a theater region
Karlsruhe with its renowned state theater is located in the middle of a theater region of unique diversity: Basel, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Kaiserslautern, Mainz, Mannheim, Pforzheim, Strasbourg, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden each have their own opera houses. The exchange of ideas between theater makers active there and students from Karlsruhe takes place in various event formats. The abundance of performances surpasses any metropolis.
